New NJ Law = New Car :(

NJ just passed a new law requiring children under 2yo to be rear facing. Our Leaf doesn't have enough leg room in the back for us to rear face the car seat w/o difficulty for the front passengers.

Can anyone recommend an SUV that meets the following requirements?

1. fits 2 convertible car seats and a booster in 2nd row
2. has seat memory function so driver side can be automatically configured for tall and short drivers
3. has good MPG - 30mpg or higher
4. is comfortable for a short driver (I'm only 5')?
5. is preferably under $40k new or used?

This may be asking alot but figure some of you may have a similar car?

TIA!

how old is your LO? The law does not go into effect until September, so if they turn 2 by then (or reach 30lbs) you dont have to worry

I would say CRV too. My son's seat is able to rear face in middle seat currently, it's a Chicco Nextfit. The gas mileage is good but not 30 mpg good. We just bought a Subaru Outback that meets your requirements. It gets better gas mileage than the CRV at sticker. Or the Subaru Forester is good too.

Can I ask why you're looking to buy a new car instead of a new car seat? I would think a car seat that fits your car is easier to purchase.

I agree.

We drive smallish cars- A Prius and a corolla. I have no issues at all fitting a rfing seat and will be able to fit a second one with no issues.

What seat do you have?

He is just 15 months so will have 6 more months before he turns 2 when the law takes effect in Sept. :(

We also can't get fit 2 car seats and a booster in our current Leaf so will need to get a new car anyway. Just trying to think long term since we're expecting a 3rd on the way.

We currently have a Britax Diplomat and Graco booster but will need to also accommodate a Graco infant seat in 7 months.

Just as a side note, your diplomat is only good for 6 years from date of manufacture. They have been retired since mid 2010, so at the most you have about another year of use if you bought one of the last runs. I would check that though, you may need a new convertible seat.

Also, on the graco booster, is it a turbo booster? If so, when you bought it, did you put the screws in the arms? This is required by graco otherwise the seat could fail to perform in an accident.

Law or not, ALL children are over 500% safer remaining rear facing until a minimum of 2 years old.

Agreed. I can't imagine everyone with LOs is in the position to go out and get a new or different car.

A CR-V is a great car I have one, but it would not be a good option for two convertible seats and a booster. Two convertible seats was tight. With three boosters it is very hard to buckle the seat belts. I couldn't imagine daily having two convertible seats and a booster.
