I agree with what he said about other countries not asking for "help" but getting it...why is there bureacracy involved at a time like this? Chat Icon

It's not bureacracy - we have actual laws against this. It's the system of checks and balances that normally is a good thing. However, in this case it has delayed things. But, you can't pick and choose where you're going to use it. It's what people tout as the best part of America - the democratic ideals. No single person or even single branch of government can make totalitarian-esque decisions.

I do think Congress could have come back from summer vacation a bit quicker to pass the aid bill and I also think that the LA Gov is not pulling her weight at all. But, it's a crisis - things are never going to run perfectly or smoothly and not everyone is going to do things at exactly the right time.

I think the blame being placed by both the mayor and some people here are borne out of utter frustration and a sense of no-control. It's a lot easier to look to a single person or vessel and say "You, you're the one that's supposed to make this all better." It's human nature but it doesn't mean it makes a whole lot of practical sense.

How exactly is he suppsed to reach these people? Are boats on the ground? Fround zero was a war zone but at least there wasn't water everywhere. I understand everyone's points...but I don't think the mayor is some big shot politico, he's probably from a poor and small town himself...this is overwhelming. Besides, he wasn't on national TV doing this, this was a local interview. Again, I never said I agreed with the way he went about things but he makes very valid points and they need help NOW...if laws are in place, find a way to go around them - NOW...they've done it in the past.

i have to agree. nyc has such a vast amount of resources readily available. very different for a little place like new orleans. and as kathy said, this mayor is at his wits end! literally they've run out of resources. i read in one of the links that even the police and firefighters were taking what they could from supermarkets and convenience stores! yes but 9/11 was not expected ... this was and I am not saying they should not be helped or that they should suffer but in a time of crisis yelling or finger pointing only hurts in the long run ......

Well, depending on whom you believe 9/11 was expected...the government definitely had inklings but the magnitude of the attacks was unexpected.

But you're right, it makes no sense to finger point...if that was the case the designers of the levees are to blame but that's like blaming the designers of the WTC. Chat Icon

OMG Sasha Chat Icon. I love you to death but that has to be the dumbest statement I have ever heard. You really do not subscribe to this way of thinking, do you? Chat Icon God, if that's what I thought, I'd be so far gone from America you'd never have known I was here.

You really, truly, deep down in your heart believe that our government officials - ANY government officials - had an idea that terrorists were going to wage war on US soil by crashing planes into NYC buildings, the Pentagon and attempt it on the White House and they let it happen??

That's so incredibly unreasonable that I truthfully cannot continue to debate with you on anything surrounding these types of issues - there's no reasoning with lunacy Chat Icon

Actually It is believed by some that the government had information re: possible attacks on US soil and NYC being one of those targets. It was mentioned in the 9/11 Report and there was a lottt of contorversy over it and over what information the government had exactly. A lot of people felt that that info should have been made public available even though it was not very specific.

Eileen! did you NOT see the National Geographic special they had last week??? There were soooooo many missed opportunities, and sooo many signs that the terrrorist were going to use commercial airliners as weapons of mass destruction. the gov't did NOTHING with that information!!

eta: they knew the terrorist were looking to attack in a BIG way on US soil, and did nothing to prevent it!! not even so much as warning the American public.

Having missed signs and knowing it was going to happen are two COMPLETELY different things. Obviously someone somewhere (or more likely, many someones in many places) f'd up pretty royally. OBVIOUSLY. However, stating that it was expected or that we knew - no, that is not the same thing and it's a pretty ridiculous statement to make.

Exactly... Did NY have water, electricity, hospitals, did survivors have homes to go to....YES! That is not the case in New Orleans, people reach a breaking point and I don't think New Orleans has the smae caliber of Mayor as NY has...look at DC for Gods Sakes...how long did they have a crack addicted Mayor.

I can't fault this man for saying what he feels.

Guys, I don't care what signs there were, no one in their right mind could possibly have imagined what happened that day. They got different tips, they knew something was coming, but there would have been no way to prepare for that...no way.

When 9/11 hit in NYC, Guiliani rallied the victims, rallied the city, brought us all together to help ourselves out. We didn't need the national guard the day because it was our own police and fireman, and volunteers from all over the 5 borroughs (sp?) came flooding in to help, to dig, to sift thru wreckage. There were 40,000 people at the superdome....at least 10,000 had to have been young and healthy, someone with the right leadership qualities could have put those 10,000 to work along with local law enforcement and rescue. But everyone's right, pointing fingers doesn't help.
It's too far gone, and now people need food, and water, and they NEED to get away from the rotting carnage....so, I'm glad that national guard reenforcements were sent in, hopefully these poor people will start to have better days....
