Eileen! did you NOT see the National Geographic special they had last week??? There were soooooo many missed opportunities, and sooo many signs that the terrrorist were going to use commercial airliners as weapons of mass destruction. the gov't did NOTHING with that information!!
eta: they knew the terrorist were looking to attack in a BIG way on US soil, and did nothing to prevent it!! not even so much as warning the American public.
Guys, I don't care what signs there were, no one in their right mind could possibly have imagined what happened that day. They got different tips, they knew something was coming, but there would have been no way to prepare for that...no way.
When 9/11 hit in NYC, Guiliani rallied the victims, rallied the city, brought us all together to help ourselves out. We didn't need the national guard the day because it was our own police and fireman, and volunteers from all over the 5 borroughs (sp?) came flooding in to help, to dig, to sift thru wreckage. There were 40,000 people at the superdome....at least 10,000 had to have been young and healthy, someone with the right leadership qualities could have put those 10,000 to work along with local law enforcement and rescue. But everyone's right, pointing fingers doesn't help. It's too far gone, and now people need food, and water, and they NEED to get away from the rotting carnage....so, I'm glad that national guard reenforcements were sent in, hopefully these poor people will start to have better days....
How could people be put to work when they haven't had a drink of water or bite of food in days
9/11 hit an isolated part of the city so people from the other bouroughs...Long Island...Westchester...etc, were able to leave the comfort of their homes and help out. Not the case down there....The devastation in large and far reaching!!!!

I don't know where you were on 9/11, but I was evacuating a high riise, and trying to get back to an apartment on 14th street, which I wasn't allowed to get to, the street had been shut down, I had to walk out of the city, it took hours and hours. Everything shut down, the stores, the trains, no cell phones. People that had taken ferries over were stranded with no place to go. It's been days now, and now the supplies have run out, my point is that if you are able to--go out with 100 other people that are young and strong and bring back whatever food you can find to feed the others who can't look for themselves. That's all I was saying. It's been blown from the get go...no one was in charge there, and it seems like all the local politicians are looking for someone else to take the lead.

Re: New Orleans Mayor Transcript to Feds: "Get off your asses"
I really don't think that you can compare the 2 situations. As horrible and tragic as 9/11 was it did not wipe out several entire cities. Katrina has not simply injured or crippled it has demolished much of the gulf coast. NYC had water, power, food, medical facilities in New Orleans they have nothing of the sort. The President was here at Ground Zero within a couple of days of 9/11, not doing a flyby, but actually on the ground. We had immediate help f-16's were deployed National Guard was here immediately. To me other then the fact that these are 2 of the worst disasters in our nations history, we are talking apples and oranges.

Re: New Orleans Mayor Transcript to Feds: "Get off your asses"
NYC has the largest police force in America.. couple that with the FDNY which is the largest fire department in american AND the Port Authority police and you have a HUGE FORCE.... You cannot compare the reaction time of 9/11 to those of New Orleans.. you just cannot.... with that said- after all the $$ spent post 9/11 you would think we could respond to a tragedy faster... after everything we've been to, this is how effectively we can respond? It's pathetic... the terrorists must be loving this.. seeing how incredibly vulnerable we STILL are after all the color-coding bullsh!t we developed.

OMG! my DH said the exact same thing!
this coupled with the fact that Congress didn't come back from summer session early when this tragedy occurred, so that they could pass the bill for the much needed aid these people need!

Sassyz75 I agree. It is scary that we are still so ill prepared.
MrsERod- It drives me crazy that they could call an emergency midnight meeting on a Sunday (i think) to do something about Terry Schivo, but when it comes to this it has taken several days.

Re: New Orleans Mayor Transcript to Feds: "Get off your asses"
See what happens when I leave work?
Yes, I think and believe deep down in my heart that the government knew about attacks on US soil but did not act proactively. As was stated previously, this was in the 9/11 Commission Reports and there were a lot of people at the CIA that resigned because they were being ignored. I do not think that they had any idea about the magnitude of the horrific attacks...but they knew something and did nothing. Let's not be naive or worse, ignorant, and believe that government works for the people and had the people's best interests at heart. That's Utopian and quite frankly is what leads us to be in possitions like these - lost. The government is run like a business and business cares not about people. And that's MHO...it's funny that you say that there's no "no reasoning with lunacy" because that's exactly how I feel when I hear people who are so completely opposed to hearing every side that they rather stay ignorant.
BTW - hooray, our President is touring the site today...4 days after the hurricane. It would have been nice had this happened on Tuesday before people started losing their minds...but whatever.
ETA: I see we're getting excited about the Mayor's comments...but did anyone actually hear the interview? Because I did and he was not raging, screaming or acting like a lunatic. He was very calm and speaking with a reporter. Reading and hearing are two different things. The fact of the matter is that these are POOR people...they could not go anywhere...they have no money, no food, no clothes. Having survived a hurricane and being rationed for food and water I count my blessings that I was at a relative's house. Imagine if this happened in NY and we had to be bussed to MSG? What would that be like? We can't leave because there's water outside...there's feces all over...I mean, seriously...would you act any differently?

Re: New Orleans Mayor Transcript to Feds: "Get off your asses"
I wouldn't call it lunacy at all and I found your post really condescending to Sasha. As others have pointed out, there were missed opportunities all over the place. Of course no one could specifically pinpoint what would happen, but questions about radical Muslims and flight schools were brought up during the Clinton administration and after and it was just a matter of time before 9/11 or something equally horrific happened.

"A matter of time before something happened" and "expecting the 9/11 attacks" are two different things. Completely different things.
Sasha, my apologies for the fervor of my post. I know it was written as directed at you but it truly was meant to be a statement against this way of thinking as a whole.
It angers me beyond belief that people would insinuate that anyone had any concept of the September 11th attacks and what they were and just let it happen. There were missed cues and missteps by all branches of government, across two administrations - there has been, and continues to be, no doubt about that. However, the way it has been stated and written throughout this post by numerous people is the "expectation" and "knowledge" that it was going to happen. Call it hubris, call it ignorance - call it whatever you like - but you would have been hard pressed, I can almost guarantee, to have found a single person in this country, government official or otherwise, that could have believed anything resembling what happened on September 11th could have happened here on American soil. There were numerous plots thwarted between 1993 and 2001, some public and some not-so-public. Do you all really have so little faith in humanity, really have the belief that those elected to government, would actually know something like this was going to happen - not that it could, that was going to happen - and they didn't care? Some people may say it's a matter of semantics but I think that words, at this point, are the most important thing we have. To twist those and say we "knew" and "expected" these attacks... it's irresponsible and completely incomprehensible.
Sasha, I completely agree with you that the government is run like a business. The difference is, I 100% believe it should be. Maybe it's cold-hearted to some but it is a reality - it's nice to have a social cause but when it comes to running a country of almost 300 million people, there is no other way to operate.
So to whoever I offended, I apologize. This particular topic, the insinuation that our leaders essentially didn't give a rat's as$ if thousands of people lived or died, if our country came under foreign attack, if we were displayed as 'touchable' to the outside world - that's just unacceptable to me and I will defend my view to the end.

Sorry, I just woke up from my nap as it seems that I now have a fever and a sore throat to nurse. But I'll be OK...
Back to this, thanks MrsProfessor for your comments...although I have thick skin and don't get offended by comments that easily, especially when someone is defending their POV, I appreciate it!
Eileen, I'll say it again and I'll say it for the last time. Yes, I believe the government had "expectation" and "knowledge" that it was going to happen." I'm not and was not pointing blame at any particular administration. Although I strongly dislike our current President, I think he's merely a puppet and definitely just the "face" behind the administration...so it goes much deeper than him. Clues and bonds go back to the 80's so to blame it on Bush who was still "wet behind the ears" when September 11th happened would be unfair. But I do believe that his administration did nothing to distinguish facts from fiction and had Iraq on the brain regardless of any attacks on us. Osama Bin Laden gave them an excuse. They took that opportunity and turned it into something else. The terrorist threat is still very much present, regardless of the "colors" or the "alerts". As I write this there are people plotting against us, children learning to hate us, men and women vowing to destroy us. We're always a target, that's pretty much known...and there were a lot of rumblings before the attacks - maybe, just maybe believing we're not "invincible" and actually listening to the clues could have helped...just a little bit. Again, I don't think anyone expected the devastation to be as severe and that's probably why it was brushed off. I do hope they learned their lesson and history will not repeat itself. To quote you: "To twist those and say we "knew" and "expected" these attacks... it's irresponsible and completely incomprehensible." - that may be your belief, but I think otherwise. We're not as strong as the government would like us to think we are. Since the bombings in London occurred I have been wondering how come they managed to arrest and get so much information...even possibly thwart attacks, but we can't? What's the interest in the Middle East and non-democratic governments? We have people right here in the US planning attacks. All of the 9/11 terrorists were living here. Yes, they came from abroad. But we gave them their knowledge. How about focusing a little - or a lot - of our resources internally?
Again, quoting you "Sasha, I completely agree with you that the government is run like a business. The difference is, I 100% believe it should be. Maybe it's cold-hearted to some but it is a reality - it's nice to have a social cause but when it comes to running a country of almost 300 million people, there is no other way to operate." - yes, the government should be run like a business. But this particular "corporation" is not doing anything for its "employees". There are nameless social issues that are currently not being addressed since we seem so pre-occupied with foreign policy. One of them was splattered all over the news because of Katrina...poverty is rampant...as is evident in N.O. where most of the population is well below the national poverty level. There's drugs, national terrorism, overpopulated jail cells, unemployment, teenage pregnancy...really too many to list. And our eaders could really give a rats a$s if thousands of people died...I'll bring up one point and I'll probably get heat for this. But our young men and women going to war, many of them from the South, from the very areas affected by Katrina - so poor that they have no choice but to volunteer, a great majority of them are not healthy enough to enlist. There's asthma, birth defects, heart issues - yet rules are bent and they're sent into harm's way...essentially to die. Many of them don't even make it onto the war zone - boot camp and the rigorous exercises will be as far as they get. But that's a "sacrifice", I guess and the ends (which I have yet to understand ) justifies the means . I realize that most of us are sheltered and I thank God we have the freedom to sit and write this, to eat, to express how we feel. But I grew up poor...really, really poor. I came from the only commonwealth still in existence. A place where the majority of the population, my father included, is active in some branch of the military. My grandfather is a Korean War veteran. My dad is a Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran (although luckily he never had to serve on the ground, he stood behind and was sent to training camps inside the US). But he has been to Panama, to Guatemala and other S. American countries and helped build hospitals, heal the sick (he's an RN) and has seen devastation firsthand. He's been involved in some sort of military since before I was born and it is his life. The reserves, the National Guard, the Army. A lot of their enrollees are from Puerto Rico. When war, chaos or tragedy occurs and they "call in the troops" the very first place to be called is PR. Where you aware of this? We're essentially still being used as "guinea pigs" sent in first, on the ground first. But this is instilled and taught to kids from a very early age...most do it with pride...hoping this is their "way out". The government chooses to be a commonwealth knowing that it needs the aid it has relied on for so long. So our beaches have grenades and are boobie trapped. So our ocean has sunken submarines and torpedoes. So what? That's an entire different discussion though and one I won't get into here or now. I will continue to believe that this current government does not truly care about its people. The bottom line (is the oil OK, BTW? ) comes first...I do thank the heavens that humanity is stepping in. That there are simple, normal human beings doing more for these homeless and sick people affected by Katrina...and much quicker...than our government. Why did it take Bush 4 days to go down there? Where was the Secretary of State? Where is the Vice President? Where is the quick action that we demonstrate toward others? Oh, I think I know...because there is nothing for us to gain by getting involved there's no rush. This is in our backyard...we'll get to it eventually. Too bad people are dying by the minute.
