New Plan For Fred
i just spoke to the social worker and she said that the new plan is to get him to a tramatic brain injury rehab place that does intense rehab instead of the sub-acute (nursing home) type places.
This is what I was thinking all along. I knew it wasn't right putting him in one of those places to rot! Not that he would rot, but he would be the youngest person there and they wouldn't work him as hard.
So I have to look at the list. All of these programs are hospital based so they have dialysis there. The downside is that they are very short term. As short as 2 weeks. I'm sure some of them are longer because he needs it. Mt. Sinai is one of them and so is Glen Cove Hospital. I feel so much better that they are thinking this way.
At this point we have to get him into the best place possible. The location is a factor and it will be a PIA visiting him if it's a place like Mt. Sinai but wouldn't you want to be in the best place possible regardless of the location (within reason?).
I mean...Mt Sinai is not Pluto!

That's the kind of place we're trying to get my dad into... it shouldn't matter what the location is - the point is his recovery, not the distance to his home! Good luck getting him into the best place possible

That is what my husband was put into. He was in Kings Park for 3 months and we were very happy with the results. It's definitely the best place for him to be. Good luck!

Re: New Plan For Fred
I would go with the best possible place over location - ANY DAY! the most important factor is that he gets the best care possible.

I don't know yet, but it should be. It's at NYU Medical Center which is a hospital and has dialysis. This could be a choice. I really hope it is It's so important that he get the best possible rehab.

Re: New Plan For Fred
Is Helen Hayes on the list? I may have told you, my wedding photographer's son was in a terrible accident and, after his bodily injuries healed, he went to 1-2 other facilities but it didn't go as well as it has been where he is now, in a coma stimulation program at Helen Hayes. The family is very satisfied with the care. It is not on Long Island, but they have "dorms" for the families and the family finally decided that they could not find what he needed locally. My photographer has been very open about this with us and I suspect that he would welcome to opportunity to provide any amount of guidance to another family. His son is 23. FM if you feel that I can hook you up to talk to the father (the photog.) about the research he did for his son's situation. He is such a nice man and my heart sunk when I heard that this happened to his son.

Re: New Plan For Fred
Mt. Sinai is definitely not pluto!!!
If that's the best place for hiom, obviously you have to send him there.
My sister's MIL is in the Glen Cove hospital rehab now (but just for a broken foot, so I can't really comment on anything that would be at the level freddy needs), but it is a really beautiful, nice place.

Re: New Plan For Fred
I heard something awful about Glen Cove last night. A woman coming out of the elevator crying said me to me not to put him in Glen Cove. They treated her grandmother badly. They wouldn't give he meals on time, wouldn't get her dressed for bed at a reasonable time. Her grandmother ended up back at St. Francis and died yesterday. She was 91 and you could say that maybe it was just her time, but she was clear about how they didn't take care of her. I felt terrible for her.
Then again, I've heard great things about that place too.
Mt. Sinai, Helen Hayes and Burke are on the list. I don't know if Burke has dialysis though. I have to talk to the social worker and the NP today. They should start the ball rolling to get him evaluated and help me choose the best place for him.
I know these places are hard for the rest of the family to get to. So, we may not be able to get there 4-5 times a week, maybe only 2-3 times a week, but it comes down to what's best for Fred.
There is another part of the family that lives in Orange Cty and N. Jersey that could make the trip too...I may need to gather the troops there.
