New Puppy

Hi guys,

I'm new to this site but have been reading all of your posts. I have a question regarding a puppy. My husband and I have a new puppy, she's about ten weeks old and we've had her for three days, she's a morke, (half yorkie, half maltese). We both work and had to leave her alone today. She'll be alone for 8 hours. My husband is going to try and stop by at lunch to check on her. I left the kitchen and hallway open for her because I hate the idea of crate training. We also left wee wee pads for her, she goes on them already. Is there anything else that I should do to make her more comfortable or should I get someone to stay with her during the day for a while? Any suggestions please?

Re: New Puppy

Hi, Welcome to LIF and congratulate on your new puppy Morkie!

I have a yorkie who is now 2 1/2 years old.

I know you are against the idea of crate training, but I really urge you to do it. It is not cruel and is honestly the best way to train the dog.

You need to be consistent with everything you do and make sure you provide them with lots of praise and reprimand when necessary.

Your puppy is very young, so training will take time....but I really believe the best way to go about this, especially since you are leaving the puppy home alone for such an extended period of time is to crate train.

Good Luck!

Re: New Puppy

Is it really ok to leave her in the crate for such a long time? She's going to end up pooing in her crate and I hate to have her sit in that. Might it be a good idea to have someone sit with her for the first couple of weeks?

You want the dog to have enough room to stand up, lay down, and turn around. Thats it, no more....There might be an accident or 2 but she will realize to hold it. Dogs don't like to go where they sleep. IMO crate training is the way to go. she sleeps in it and she stays in it while you are not home. As soon as she comes out of the crate, she goes to the bathroom. And right before she goes in the crate, she goes to the bathroom.

Thank you so much. I might consider this, it sounds like the right way to go.

Re: New Puppy

keep in mind that, like another poster wrote on NFR, that just because you crate train doesn't mean you can leave her in there all day - she needs to be let out every 2-3 hours to do her business, either on the wee wee pad or outside.

Re: New Puppy

I believe that the general rule of thumb is that puppies can hold their bladder for as many hours as they are old in months plus one. For ex, if your puppy is 3 months old, they can hold it for 3 - 4 hours. If you plan to crate train, make sure that someone is home to let him out during those intervals. DH and I were unable to do this, so we built a 5x5 area to keep Marley during the day. The area had her crate, food and water (we free-feed her) and pads. We have a walker come mid day. She is never home alone for more than 4.5 hrs. Surprisingly, it was very easy to pad train her. Because we praise her when she makes, she tended to hold it until we got home. This helped us to enforce her to go on the pad, and it is making the transition outside easy. Make sure that you spend alot of uninterupted time with your puppy when you are home to help his transition to his new home. Good luck! Post pics Chat Icon

Re: New Puppy

We haev a new puppy- she is 12 weeks old. she is a cava poo- cavalier king charles spaniel mixed with a poodle.

The breeder recommended we crate train her.

We have her a week and 3 days. she is doing wonderfully in her crate..

As soon as she stops teething, we will take her out.. -
she has only had 2 accidents in her crate- and she peed on the newspaper part.

we have her crate set up so half of it is her bed, and the other half is newspaper just in case.. she is smart enough to go on the paper.

at first we were hesitant about the crate, but agree that it is teh best way to train a pup.

8 hours is ok. i wouldnt go more than that. Right now, cindee is alone for about 7-8 hours max, she does just fine!

Thanks I'm really considering this. We won't leave her past the 8 hours. My husband went home at lunch time to check on her and she was ok, no accidents. She went on her wee wee pad. Thanks for your advice.

Re: New Puppy

You have to crate train her!! On the weekends you keep her in the crate, let her out for 20 min's put her back into the crate and keep doing this. They don't like going to the bathroom in the crate so this will teach her how to hold it in. It sucks because you want to play with them all the time but you can do that in the 20min's she's out.
Also, pick her up and bring her outside and pick a spot for her to go to the bathroom. After a month have her follow you out, to that spot and make sure she goes.
