New Puppy Questions!
Hi there
I am joining this board bc we now have more than just a fish! We rescued a 12 week old poodle/bichon mix and she is SO sweet! We love her so much already!
Two questions - one, we are crating her during the day, but she cries when I leave and I feel SO bad....is that normal? Anything I can do so shes not so sad? Im gone for 3 hours, then come home for an hour to let her out and play with her and then gone for another 3-3.5 hours until Im home again for good.
Question two - we are housebreaking her, we are not doing the pads (dont know if thats the right thing). So, Ive been taking her out every hour and a half or so. This is two parts I guess.....sometimes we are out there FOREVER, but she does eventually go....does this get better? Tonight was not fun standing out in the rain for 10 minutes, LOL. We parise her with training treats and lots of petting, verbal praise when she goes. Second part, will she just eventually "get" that she has to go outside and start letting us know somehow or are there signs Im going to have to forever try to read? Right now, its hard bc she is checking out her new home, so she is sniffing around a lot, so I cant tell if shes just checking the place out or if shes looking for a place to go? So far, she hasnt soiled her crate at all (good puppy!!!) and has only had one accident in the house.

Re: New Puppy Questions!
No advice. Just wanted to say congratulations on your newest addition! And I want to see a picture. That sounds like such a cute combination.

Yes, the crying when you leave should get better.
Also when the dogs realize they need to go to the bathroom outside, they will go much quicker! I remember walking my dog forever when we first got her! Now she goes as soon as we get outside.
We also got bells - I think they are called Poochie Bells. They are bells on a string that you hang over the door. Whenever we went outside we would have her touch the bells and say "lets go potty". Now when she has to go she will ring the bells herself. Sometimes she rings it because she is bored, but we have had her long enough that we know the difference.

New Puppy Questions!
We taught our Yorkie to scratch the back door when he has to go out. We literally took his paw and scratched the door with it and said "Have to go out?" He scratches the door now when he needs to go out. Same for when we are at anyone's house with him, he knows to scratch their door too.
Also, we were finding he was going out multiple times over night when we knew he could handle at least 6-7 hours at a time. We started telling him "Last time before bed, time to go pee pee." and it got MUCH better. He got it and now if he has to go out in the middle of the night, we know he really means it.

It sounds like you are doing things correctly. The crying will get better. I could not crate train my dog because she FREAKED out in the crate. But the breeder warned us she didn't like being confined. I didn't care so much about the crying and carrying on, but every time I locked her in the crate I came home to bad diarrhea all over her and everything. I did crate her at night, but where she could see me. She was much calmer then. But this helped with training her to hold it all night.
For training potty the best thing is what you are doing. It is terrible to stand out there, but they don't want to be in the rain either so they eventually get it. But I did use the pads also, which I was glad I did. We put them in the corner by our side door we rarely use, so she associated going with the door. But I am glad I taught her to use them. It came in handy during Sandy and other really bad storms when I didn't want my 6 lb dog outside and she didn't want to go.
