New Puppy Questions

We are thinking about getting a small breed puppy from a breeder. I have only had larger dogs and it has been some time since we had one. Any help would be appreciated?

When are they able to get their vaccinations so that they can go outdoors?

How long can I leave them in a crate or playpen area for?

Do little dogs chew furniture less than big breed dogs?

Thanks!!!

Re: New Puppy Questions

There aren't many differences between large breeds and small breeds.

One is that larger breed dogs stay "puppies" longer. Big dopey puppies (so cute)

When are they able to get their vaccinations so that they can go outdoors?

Same as large breed. The breeder should have done his/her vaccines up to the point you get it. Then you bring them to your vet and they will tell you whats next. I think at 11 weeks, after that last booster, they can go out, but only on your property. It isn't until after their Rabies vaccine that you can bring them out into the general public.

How long can I leave them in a crate or playpen area for?

Rule of thumb is the puppy can stay in the crate, without accidents, for the age it is in months. If it's 2 months, probably 2-3 hrs MAX without having an accident. And so on. Crate has to be just big enough for him/her to lay down and turn around. Any bigger, the dog will pee & poop on one side and sleep on the other. Training will be a nightmare. Buy a crate with a divider panel so the crate will grow with the dog.

Playpen area, you can leave them longer because you can put out a wee wee pad, food, water and toys. They aren't being forced to hold it and can be free. I wouldn't leave a tiny puppy more than 4-5 hrs at a time.

Do little dogs chew furniture less than big breed dogs?

They all chew furniture. Whether it's a lab or a chihuahua . They are teething and need to chew. That's why leaving them unattended is a no no. You need to be present to correct the behavior ASAP. There is also bitter apple spray that is sold you can put on places the pup has been chewing to deter them. Always keep chew toys around for them to help redirect them. If they have enough toys and stimulation from their humans, they will be less likely to eat the furniture.

The first few months are crucial in training a good dog. When getting them as a little puppy, you gain the benefit of training them your way to fit your lifestyle. No bad behaviors to break them of first. So take advantage! YouTube basic training tutorials and if your puppy is turning into a terror, call a trainer before it's too late lol
