New to the homes board
Hi everyone, I have been posting on the parenting forum for about a week now, but figured I would come over here, as I have a few questions about relocating. DH, myself, and our newborn son live in Bayside, Queens. We love it here, we live on a great block with lots of young families. However, the public schools are somewhat of a problem. We are in district 26 which is considered great, but the middle & high schools are not good at all. There is always the Catholic school route, but I think I would rather just buy in a neighborhood where there are good public schools from K-12. I am looking for some ideas on towns. I love Great Neck, Manhasset, Port Washington, Roslyn, etc. on the north shore of Nassau. DH likes the south shore of nassau ie. Wantagh, Merrick, Bellmore, Seaford, Massapequa. Anyone live in any of these areas that can give me input on schools, nursery schools, family friendliness of the towns, etc? We want to narrow down our search to three towns tops, and take it from there. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Hi there and welcome!
I lived in Merrick for about three years (just moved to Lynbrook for a larger apt. in Feb) and loved it. Great schools, great neighborhoods.

Re: New to the homes board
welcome to the home board!! I'm in Howard Beach so I don't know much about the towns you listed (although I love Massapequa!)......I love Bayside too- do you own or rent? as you're probably prepared for- real estate taxes are much higher in LI than in Queens- so we'll probably send our future kids to the public schools here and then private school for high school, since I don't think we'll be moving. its not one of the towns you listed, but my sis just moved to Levittown and loves it! but I know certain school districts are better than others in Levittown. good luck with the house search!!!

All the neighborhoods you mention in Long Island seem good, but I have a question.
What's wrong with the middle and high schools in SD26? That's an award winning school district. Isn't the High School Cardozo? I heard that's such a great high school.
I read somewhere that SD26 has the highest performing school district for grades K-9 in all of New York City.
I guess I could be wrong.

We are in northern Bayside, which is zoned for Bayside High School. Not nearly as good as Cardozo. Thanks for the input ladies!

Re: New to the homes board
every town that you mentioned will be great - and has great, top rated schools. Your choices have a better LIRR train line though.
don't count out NYC schools if you love your area - students can apply to all the high schools in the city - including cardozo. Cardozo takes 1/3 of their students from out of district through their specialty programs (dance, law and matha nd science)

DH teaches at Bayside HS. They have great programs - he said that they are starting to rival Cardozo on reputation - and remember your little one wont be in HS for a long time and a lot may change.
but all the places you mentioned have great schools!

I live in your area now also- and we wont be staying b/c of the schools
and the taxes in Bay Terrace are NOT that much cheaper then LI esp when you factor in the $5K+ we pay in city tax
most houses I like have taxes $6K or above
I would prefer to stay in the North Shore b/c of the schools- but we might end up on the South Shore b/c DH wants a canal front home - but all the districts you listed are good
I wish we could stay in Bay Terrace- I really like it there- but we will get much more for our money back on Long Island
