So if you get nervous you might be losing power because of your own policies that turn people against you , you just change the rules.
Nice.
Sounds very dictatorish

Ironic coming from the same people who spent 4 years calling Trump a dictator.

These comments. Chat Icon Are you literally kidding me with the outrage???? Republicans across this country have made it there sole purpose in life to rewrite any map where it'll benefit them all in attempt to control the vote, suppress voting and keep themselves in power. That's actual gerrymandering at its absolute finest and Republicans have made a sport out of it. Can't be mad at one party without being mad at the other. Double standard much? Chat Icon

ETA - FTR, I don't agree with the practice regardless of party. It's wrong either way.

Did you read most of the comments? We all agree it shouldn't be done by either party, but this impacts most of us directly since we live in NY (where other than the metro areas - is mostly red).

I'm so tired of the 2 wrongs making a right.
I'm so tired of the but... Trump did this....
But Cuomo did that.....
If I murder someone do I get to say- well but this other person murdered someone and got away with it, so I should too?
How about they focus on fixing the system instead of breaking it more?

It's not about two wrongs making a right.

It's about the fact that it's hypocritical to be up in arms because now the gerrymandering is in YOUR backyard but nevermind the fact that this has been a constant problem across this nation, in many states for years.

If *you* (collective you) wants to be upset over this than you need to equally upset that this is a nationwide issue that affects our voting system and our nation as a whole. You can't just get twisted over Democrats as if this is some "new practice".

I'm tired of people not acknowledging the corruption that exists on BOTH sides of the aisle.

Who said we’re not outraged for the way politics are run in this country? This corruption is ancient and it’s getting worse as time passes. We do live in NY and I’m sure that’s why it’s being mentioned in here, because we’re experiencing it to the fullest. The way democrats have been acting in NY have impacted my family directly in many ways for quite sometime already. I’m sure if I lived in Texas, I’d have been up in arms for whatever corruption is going there. Why? Because I’d have been living it. I’m an independent and do not believe in political trifectas. In order for a state, country to run properly, there needs to be a balance and clearly we don’t have that but saying something like “but they’re doing that over there so why shouldn’t we?” is the most ignorant thing to ever say.

That’s their goal even at the federal level. They’ve openly admitted they want to restructure the SC and add more seats to it obviously with judges that would side with them.

Perfectly said Hofstra!

If people are going to be up in arms about this, it’s something they should’ve been up in arms about already, as this is not a new practice.

Not necessarily. Fix your own house and backyard first. Democrats should be outraged at this just as republicans should be to. They should hold their own party accountable. I hold my kid and my husband accountable before we start talking about what others do. I never tell my son it’s ok to be a bully because other kids in your school do it. I tell him to stop and worry about him then focus on changing others. I don’t focus on other kids before setting my kid straight.

I think that is what annoys me. Someone defending their party just because and not holding them accountable. Frankly at this point, I don’t even understand how anyone can align so strongly to Dem or Rep.

ETA: it’s all disgusting. I used to side eye Rep and align Dem. Now I’m grossed out by both and how this country is being run.

I didn’t. U’re saying we should be upset with the corruption in red states too while under the same breath also inferring how if they’re doing it then why not the other party. It’s always...but Republicans are worse...but Trump is worse. The comparisons need to stop, they don’t take us anywhere.

I'm not talking about corruption specifically. And yes, you did in fact miss my point.

What I'm saying is that gerrymandering of states has been going on ALL over this country for YEARS and if all anyone has done is shrug their shoulders at it because it wasn't happening in their own backyard but now that it is, they are losing their $hit, well then that's hypocrisy at its finest.

People sure do have a lot of "selective outrage" in this country.

New York Legislature approves new congressional maps

It is pathetic and politics at it's finest. There needs to be an entire overhaul of the political system in this country. It really does not matter that it happened in the past. People need to stop justifying their actions because it happened before. It is wrong so it needs to be fixed not point fingers and be like oh you did it so I can too. This is why this country is crap because both sides are only concerned with one upping each other instead of fixing what needs to be.

We need BIG, sweeping changes in this country for sure! We're such a mess.

Am I the only one who wonders what it might be like living in another county? Sometimes I toy with the idea of trying something completely new and different down the road when my kids are grown and DH and I have more flexibility in our lives.

We're NEVER ranked as one of the happiest and most content counties, there must be a reason why. I'm definitely starting to think that America isn't the "end all and be all" as we were raised to believe. I just sometimes wonder what else this globe has to offer.

I don’t think anyone here is justifying the democrats doing this. Many have said it’s not right. But to suddenly be up in arms because the democrats are finally doing what republicans have been doing for a while…it’s hypocritical.

It’s wrong on either side. But call it out as a wrong when it’s happening on YOUR side too. Otherwise you’re hypocrite.

I think about leaving the country all the time. I think maybe we should start looking at other governments similar to how other countries would come and evaluate our democracy in the past. I know all governments and countries have corruption but we should evaluate other strong governments and do restructuring.

Can someone explain this in a non bias way.

How does redrawing any “lines” guarantee anything?? Maybe it’s because I don’t really even know what this means.

I don’t register as any party at all so I vote either way but even people that Are registers a certain party can still choose to vote for the other one.

I agree with you. Clearly we're failing somewhere so perhaps there is something to be learned from other countries, especially those that are statistically happier.

I think about it a lot but it's a fairly difficult process to just pick up and try to move to another country. Many countries don't want us, just like we don't want them! LOL I love the Caribbean and I also loved Costa Rica. Just not sure if I could handle the lack of certain things we take for granted here.

However - for you Hofstra, have you ever considered Canada? You like the cold weather and Canada seems like a very nice place to live while not going too far from the States. Montreal looks particularly beautiful.

I don’t register as any party at all so I vote either way but even people that Are registers a certain party can still choose to vote for the other one.

What is gerrymandering?

It is a way that governing parties try to cement themselves in power by tilting the political map steeply in their favor. The goal is to draw boundaries of legislative districts so that as many seats as possible are likely to be won by the party’s candidates. Drafters accomplish it mainly through two practices commonly called packing and cracking.

A packed district is drawn to include as many of the opposing party’s voters as possible. That helps the governing party win surrounding districts where the opposition’s strength has been diluted to create the packed district.

Cracking does the opposite: It splits up clusters of opposition voters among several districts, so that they will be outnumbered in each district.

An efficiently gerrymandered map has a maximum number of districts that each contain just enough governing-party supporters to let the party’s candidates win and hold the seat safely, even during “wave” elections when the opposition does especially well. And it packs the opposition’s supporters into a minimum number of districts that the opposition will win overwhelmingly.

Exactly!

I think about leaving the country all the time. I think maybe we should start looking at other governments similar to how other countries would come and evaluate our democracy in the past. I know all governments and countries have corruption but we should evaluate other strong governments and do restructuring.

No doubt that would be one heck of a move! I have two friends that moved out of the country, one to Japan and one to Scotland, and it definitely wasn't trivial.

So funny you mention Canada, I "joke" with my DH all the time that I was meant to be Canadian. lol Honestly though, I'd be open to a move there but of course, I would need to learn a lot more about the country first.

I might be even more interested after visiting Vancouver Island! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was considering Victoria, because the weather is so much milder. A few Inches of snow closed the island down for like 2 days. Chat Icon

I feel like as I get older, I want to see and experience so many more places. I can't wait to travel more often, maybe I'll stumble upon the place that I want to settle into forever at some point.

LOL!! Yes Victoria will not be the place for you. That’s more for me. Alot of Canadians from the prairie go there for warmer weather and island life.

New York Legislature approves new congressional maps

Red states blues states, at least in the us people can if they have the ability, move to an area that they align with more. Imagine living in a country where you don’t even have that option?

To add to what another poster wrote, I think it's clearest with numbers.

Let's say there is a state with three districts. For ease of numbers, there are 100 people, 52 registered Dems and 48 Repubs. It undergoes a Republican gerrymander.

Before the gerrymander (all numbers Dems/Reps)

District 1 - 25/18 - Solid Dem
District 2 - 22/20 - Swing, lean Dem
District 3 - 5/10 - Solid Rep

A Repub gerrymander changes boundaries. After the gerrymander:

District 1 - 29/15 - Solid Dem
District 2 - 17/23 - Swing, likely Repub
District 3 - 6/10 - Solid Rep

The party makeup did not change, but the Dems were redistributed in a way that completely surrendered an already blue district while swinging one the other way, making a net gain of one district for the Repubs.

Regarding the controversial piece of it: I am not normally a fan of whataboutism but the Dems didn't start this. Repubs are NOTORIOUS for this - Ohio, Texas, NC - because they usually can't win without it. So honestly until everyone stops I don't know what people expect the Dems to do. I am sick of them bringing knives to a gun fight - not even knives, more like rubber chickens - so I don't blame them. But I do wish NEITHER side would do it.
