Newborn - young infant moms or BTDT, did you give baby paci to fall asleep in crib?
DS#2 is 8 weeks today. He was a huge sucker in his early weeks and I worked hard trying to find a paci he would take and one that would stay in for more than 4 seconds. I give him paci during the day when he's not due to eat but starts sucking on his hands, etc. I give him last bottle in glider in his room at night and he usually falls asleep during it and sometimes I put him in cirb and he stays asleep and sometimes he wakes and fusses. Then I give him paci. The problem is that if it pops out before he is in a deep sleep, he starts fussing again and I have to go put it back in his mouth... sometimes several times. DS#1 was very attached to his paci and was addicted to it until we took it away at 2. I remember having these issues with him too... it would fall out in the night, he would wake, too little to put back in himself and I would be up several times a night. This was a problem until he was old enought to put it back in his mouth himself.
Do you use a paci to help soothe young DC to sleep? Would it be better to not give it? How else can I soothe him besides a bottle or rocking?
I'd appreciate any and all advice/experience!
Thanks!!

My dd is not a fan of the paci. She usually falls asleep on her bottle and then I put her to bed last night I just put her in awake and she fell asleep on her own within 5-10 minutes.

Re: Newborn - young infant moms or BTDT, did you give baby paci to fall asleep in crib?
Absolutely! DS has always had a paci in his crib from the beginning. Once he got old enough to put it back in after falling out, we started keeping 3 or 4 pacis in the crib at night so if he woke up and couldn't find it, there were others he could grab and then go right back to sleep. It has worked soooo well for us! He is the best sleeper. Now at almost 13 months, he has 5 or 6 of them in the crib at all times and we don't hear a peep from him between 7am and 7pm. When he does wake up, he'll stand up and throw all of them out of the crib and then whine... that's our alarm clock.

DD hasn't really taken to the paci. Sometimes it will calm her down, but I have to hold it in her mouth for her. She doesn't keep it in her mouth herself. So she doesn't get it when going to sleep. I guess it's a good thing that she doesn't really like it, but sometimes I wish she'd take the paci. The only thing that puts her to sleep is us rocking her to sleep.

DS started using one an hour after he was born - he is now 12.5 months and I have no intentions of taking it from him anytime soon.Though we are trying to limit his usage during the day.
He started out with the Soothie from the hospital and still uses that type. I've tried so many others but he had a hard time keeping them in his mouth.
He sleeps much better with it and he now knows how to find it in his sleep and plug himself

DD uses one...sometimes she spits it out and is fine and sometimes I need to put it back...it used to be like 3 times a night but last night she didn't fuss for one until 5:30am...so it varies

Re: Newborn - young infant moms or BTDT, did you give baby paci to fall asleep in crib?
DD is 3 months now and we use a paci, mostly for naps/sleeping, but sometimes while we're out and she's fussy, which I'm trying to do that less and less now.
For the past month or so she's discovered her hands and loves eating them, so that's more fun for her than the paci, but if she has access to her hands when I put her down for a nap she can't stop playing and won't sleep. So we still swaddle her and give her the paci.
In the beginning I said - only for emergency use, if she was crying and we couldn't calm her. But it helped SO much, and the Happiest Baby on the Block book talks about how sucking is instinct for them and calms them, so how wrong can it be in the beginning.
I thought I would try and not use it at 3 months, but now I'm not so sure, still trying to figure out what is right!

Re: Newborn - young infant moms or BTDT, did you give baby paci to fall asleep in crib?
I have been having the same issue for the past couple nights, and DD is 8 weeks. She just started looking for it in the middle of the night and I am constantly up putting it back in her mouth. She used to just suck till she fell asleep and that was it, but it's even happening during naps. She's trying to roll over now so if she's not in a deep sleep this is when it happens
When do they start putting it in their mouthes themselves? I am just happy she is in a bassinet in my room b/c that would totally stink if I had to get up and go to her room every time.

Thanks everyone!
With DS#1, when he was old enough to put it back himself, I used to keep 4 or 5 in his crib too!
I can't remember how old he was before he was able to do it himself... I wish I could!

Re: Newborn - young infant moms or BTDT, did you give baby paci to fall asleep in crib?
If he is fussing, just let him fuss a little and see if he goes back to sleep. That will help him soothe hismelf back to sleep by himself w/o the paci. DS is now 5 months and soothes himself back to sleep w/o the paci every time, except for a 3-4 a.m. wake up, but I put the paci in and he's good for an hour or two. It sure beats 3, 4, 5 times a night it used to.
I was soooo anti-paci, but DS needed to suck so that is what he got. But we set ground rules, only for nap and bedtime, only in the car if it a long car trip or he is crazy screaming. He very rarely gets it for any other reason.
