Newborn clothes....

Hello mommies!!!

I have a quick question to bother you guys with. I just recently had my baby shower (click here for pics), and though I got a lot of gifts, I didn't get too many infant clothes (got many PJs from 6-18 months). Thankfully, I received a lot of gift cards, and would like to start buying outfits for our junebug lil one.

My question: what are the clothing necessities for infants-toddlers? what should I buy more of? what should I stay away from?

I believe I've heard that onesies are a Godsend, but I just wanted to confirm with you veterans. Chat Icon

Re: Newborn clothes....

I liked to have at least 10-12 undershirts/onsies and about 7-10 stretchies/pj's (one piece pj's) in each size as well. If you baby has lots of outfits - you'll need socks. Halo sleepsacks are great - I still use them and my baby is over a year - rather than blankets since they are safer. I like the dressing gowns with open bottoms for PJ for newborns. Cute hats are important for warmth and summer shade.

I found bathrobes of very little use - they are real cute but I never really used them. I also never used baby mittens although I have friends who did. My baby rarely scratched his face when he was little.

Re: Newborn clothes....

I know the temptation is irresistable, but try not to buy too much stuff right now. You have no idea how big or small your little one will come out! They told me Alex was going to be huge, and she came out at 6lbs. I had to send DH running to the store to pick up Newbie clothes because she didn't fit into anything I had bought her!

For essentials, I would have about 8-10 undershirts. In the beginning I avoided onesies because they rub against the umbilical cord and can irritate it. I opted for the side-snap t-shirts because it leaves the umbilical cord area open to dry and fall off on its own, without any irritation. Whatever you get, make sure it has side snaps or buttons down the middle because seriously, at 3am, when you're baby is groggy/sleepy, the last thing you want to do is upset him/her by pulling a shirt over his/her head! Alex HATED it. She would wail at the top of her lungs...

I also think 8-10 sleepers/gowns are essential. I prefer the sleepers because they cover the feet so you don't have to worry about cold feet, or getting socks in the beginning. Alex lived in her sleepers for the first 3 months. The gowns are REALLY convenient for changing baby in the middle of the night.

Other than that, a few large towels, washcloths and hats. The rest comes later...

Re: Newborn clothes....

Everyone told me the gowns were great so I bought a ton, but dh and I hated them. We worried about her feet being cold- we liked feety pj's the best.

Socks are good to buy- I like old navy and Gap socks becuase they stay on well.

Also, dd was way smaller then any of the clothes we had and we were scrambling for stuff that fit her too.

BTW, you will also get a ton of clothes after she is born.

Re: Newborn clothes....

I wouldn't go crazy buying the newborn clothing...maybe just 1 or 2 alfits for the 1st week...then maybe a few things for 0-3 months...but again, wouldn't go crazy (IMO). I found that at 2 months they have a growth spurt and will be in 3-6 months size for a while... have plenty of them. As an infant as well, the nightgowns work great and all the one piece button ups. Keep baby comfy when they are that little. Hope this is of help. Chat Icon

Re: Newborn clothes....

The one thing I was glad that I didn't do was have too many 0-3 month clothes. My boy outgrew those clothes at like 8 weeks, so they went in the "too tight" box quickly.

Re: Newborn clothes....

my daughter grew out of the newborn clothes quick. If I were you I would purchase more 3-6 months or larger. The child really grows so quickly and its better to roll up the sleeves and get more use of the outfit.

My daughter literally grew out of the newborn outfits within a few weeks - i had to pack them up because they absolutely didn't fit.

Re: Newborn clothes....

So, I finally got the chance to sort out all the clothes I received from my baby shower. Just wanted to know, from you guys, what I should get more of:

Newborn
8 short-sleeve onesies
1 PJ
2 pants

0-3 months
5 short-sleeve onesies
5 tank onesies
3 gowns
1 PJs
1 outfit

3 months
1 short-sleeve onesie
2 PJs

3-6 months
5 short-sleeve onesies
1 PJ
2 outfits

3-9 months
2 Pants

6-9 months
1 PJ
1 outfit

12 months
1 PJ

18 months
1 PJ
1 outfit

5 caps
9 bibs
8 booties
4 plush blankets
8 receiving blankets
2 robes
2 towels (hooded)

So now what? Should I get more newborn items? Or maybe 0-3 months?

HELP!

I totally agree with the gown comment. Also just get a few newborn onesies as they only last a few weeks. I just kept rewashing them. 0-3 size goes very quick also....my daughter grew out of them in 3 weeks!

Re: Newborn clothes....

My DD was 9lbs. 4 oz. and grew out of the newborn stuff very fast. There were things she never wore. I liked her in anything soft and comfy. You will find you avoid the outfits that are complicated. Feety Pajamas, halo sleep sack, onesies, old navy socks, few baby towels, and at least one nice outfit for company & pictures-- those were a few of my favorites.
