Newborn Feedings

Hello Ladies,

Being a new mommy, I have yet another question. How many times a day do/did you feed your newborn? I keep hearing to wake him every 2-3 hours, but sometimes he stays up for almost two hours in between feedings so when do I feed him again.

I am nursing and bottle feeding pumped breast milk.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Newborn Feedings

Alex ate about every 3 hours or so. I was breastfeeding. I only woke him 2x because my breasts were so engorged. Other than that I let him sleep, I figured he would wake up when he was hungry.

How long did your baby sleep in between feedings?

Also, how many times a day did you nurse?

I don't remember how many times I nursed a day. Maybe 7. Alex was a sleeper it seemed like he was always sleeping. He would only stay up for about an hour at a time and sometimes less than that. I made a spreadsheet to keep track of the feedings and how long, how many wet diapers etc. It really helped ease my mind because I could always look back at the schedule. BF is so hard. I had a column for each of the following items and I would fill it out after each feeding:

Time of Day
Which Breast
How long?
# of wet diapers since last feed
# of bowel movements since last feed
Other - here I usually kept track of what time I put him down for a nap and what time he woke up.

If I was worried about him I would look back at the sheet and know how many wet diapers etc. It also helps you look back over a few days and see what kind of pattern you are following.

DH and I have been keeping a log too. It makes things so much easier. I BF all day and feed him every 2-3 hrs usually.
