newborn sleeping routines
I'm really confused about newborns and sleeping 'routines'. Most advice I read suggests that babies be put down for naps and bedtime when they are sleepy but still awake and they should not be rocked or nursed to sleep. This should be a consistent practice from birth or as early as possible. However, most resources also do not advise letting your baby CIO until at least 4 months. I have a 2 week old baby girl who we have to rock to sleep or falls asleep while in our arms during her feeding.
If I follow the advice and put her down while awake, she will most definitely cry. Do I just let her? Isn't she too young for CIO? But the longer I rock him to sleep or hold her in my arms, the longer I'll be re-inforcing this bad sleep association, right? I'm really confused. Thoughts, anyone?

Rocking and nursing to sleep is totally appropriate while your baby is so young. Don't worry about bad sleep associations for the first few months. The baby is way too young to be expected to fall asleep on her own if she doesn't naturally.

My DS is 2 1/2 months now and wont fall asleep unless nursed or rocked. If you can figure out another way, let me know! ( I actually don't mind, I love it! )

agreed..my dd is 4 month old and just started somewhat of a routine a couple of weeks ago..when they are that young, everything changes day to day and week to week..just when you think they made themselves a schedule..it changes..def just go with the flow..and rock that little one...

Re: newborn sleeping routines
I feel so much better...I agree with you. She's so tiny...there's no way I can let her just lay in her bassinet and cry. I love rocking her to sleep and seeing how content she looks to be in my arms.
The internet is great in that it offers us tons of info at our fingertips, but I'm also finding too much info can drive you crazy!
Thanks!

Please do not worry about that yet. My son was like that when he was 2 weeks old. They are still so new, so if they need to be rocked to sleep, so be it. My son is now 12 weeks old and he can now fall asleep without being held or rocked. He started doing this a few weeks ago. Your baby is still so new, I wouldn't worry yet!

From what I've read, it's fine, in fact good to rock a baby 3 months and youger to sleep. Even 4 months. At 5 or 6 months you can start the CIO method if you choose to. But before that, babies don't have the ability to soothe themselves. The CIO method helps them learn how to sooth themselves. HTH
