Newborns - Waking Up/Hungry

DS is almost 3 weeks old. He does these squeaks and groans in his sleep - around when he should be getting up, but then he's still sleeping. I say should be getting up, b/c you'd think he'd be hungry (about 2.5 - 3 hrs. after last feeding) - if I leave him, he stays sleeping for another hour sometimes though. I feel bad too - b/c if he is hungry, maybe he just has a hard time waking up? Do you think if he was really hungry though - he'd be waking up and crying?

DD does the same thing and I always think it's gas pains. I don't want to wake her when she's sleeping either. When she's hungry and awake, she cries. The grunts and squeaks are different. Sometimes I will wake her and she'll eat, but I'm not sure that's why she was grunting. I could be wrong though...maybe it's hunger pains? Still figuring everything out at 5 weeks.

I never woke DD up to eat - I believe that if they are hungry, they will wake on their own.

my 3 week old also squeaks and groans in his sleep but he does it anytime he moves or switches positions. If he is hungry, he full out cries. I think we woke him up his first week to eat but then we stopped & let him wake us up.

Jordan does the same. When he really is hungry and ready to eat, he cries.

Re: Newborns - Waking Up/Hungry

I always interpreted that as an early hunger cue. Crying is a sign of extreme hunger and frustration, which I wanted to avoid...for his benefit and my 3am sanity : ). When my DS grunts and is restless and it is around the 2-3 hour since his last meal, I always offer him food. 99.9% of the time he takes it. That's how I know that the grunts were hunger related. Now at 11 weeks old, I can say that most of our nights are cry free. He grunts, I feed, he goes back to sleep peacefully. Knocking on wood!!!

If he reached his birth weight at the last visit to the pediatrician, then I would leave him. They wake up when they want to eat!
