newer concrete driveway cracking
Has anyone here had a concrete driveway done, and if so when did you start experiencing cracking? I had my driveway done this past May, and in the past 2-3 weeks, 2 large cracks have appeared, oddly enough not under our cars, but in front of our cars towards the garage door. I realize its been cold and that must have been what caused it, but I would have expected my driveway to last at least a year before it started cracking! I don't think if I called the mason he would do anything since there is no guarantee in the contract either

Re: newer concrete driveway cracking
I was told cement driveways should be at least 6 inches thick and the ground should have went through a tamper machine process first to make the ground more solid before pouring of cement.

Re: newer concrete driveway cracking
I echo what the person said above....plus do you know if they put fibers in the cement....did you water the new cement during the first week to help it cure?

I am not quite sure what they did in the process, but the guy did not tell us to water it... he just said keep off of the driveway for a week...

Re: newer concrete driveway cracking
I would contact the person who did the job. If they put fibers in it, had at least 6 inches of cement, used rebar, tampered the ground down before pouring the cement, etc you should not have any cracks.
Was anyone around to watch the job and what procedures they used?

Unfortunately, no as I was working while he did it... I do know in the contract he put in something about withstanding a certain amount of PSI but as far as what he did in the process I can't say for sure. I am hoping when I call him he will actually come and attempt to repair it.

Re: newer concrete driveway cracking
I would contact today and ask if he did all above because if so it wouldn't have cracked. The person I asked does this and said he would be responsible for watering the cement he wouldn't ask the homeowner. He says a lot of people get away with these jobs by giving a really low estimate but what happens is they cut corners and the quality is hampered not saying this is what happens to you but the guy I asked says sometimes he gets turned down because his estimate is high compared to others they get but he tries to explain some people give a cheap estimate because they won't put that much hard work into what really needs to be done. I wouldn't pay for the repair since how early it cracked.

I would also ask if he was on the job or he let others do the work since you weren't home and don't know.
