Newsday article today - 3 year old who drowned in Shirley

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/suffolk/ny-lipool0808,0,1649989.story

I still can't figure out how the parents could allow a 3 year old to roam the neighborhood for hours at a time and not check on him.

This is sooo sad and could have been prevented.

I CAN believe it! A few years ago, I called CP because a small child was walking around with NO parent in sight! When I reported it, the woman at the CP office said "well, there is nothing we can do about it - it is CULTURAL"

So you mean to tell me it is "cultural" to let your 2 year old kid wander the streets without a parent???

I was appalled! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Newsday article today - 3 year old who drowned in Shirley

I did go to the Police - they wouldn't do anything so they told me to call CP and you see where that got me....

...if you want the FULL story, I actually wound up "hitting" the kid with my CAR! He was NOT hurt at all, but his bike wound up under my car. Who would think that there would be a 2 year old un-supervised roaming outside in nothing but a diaper???
It was terrible that CP did nothing. I told them that this had happened before and I asked them to keep an eye on that house/family. They told me they are not in the business of babysitting and can only react when they are called!
DISGUSTING!

I just read that article over lunch. VEry sad indeed. How could the mom not know the 3-year old was blocks away for periods of time. My kids are in my sight at all times!

Wow, that's unbelievable. What kind of CP system is that. You can't "Protect" them after something serious happens.
