Next ? What's the difference between an ultrascreen and a sonogram?

And if your doctor doesn't do the 3 or 4D sonos, where can you get it done?

The ultrascreen is a specific ultrasound, usually done at 12 weeks (it has to be done at a specific time, week-wise). They measure skin folds in the neck & various other things, to assess risk for Downs and a few other problems. It is an ultrasound just like all others, they just do specific measurements and such then.

My Doctor does not do them either... there is a place in East Meadow called Impact Technologies that does them...

Re: Next ? What's the difference between an ultrascreen and a sonogram?

I'm not over 35 and my dr. send me for the ultrascreen also. He said he's sending all of his patients for an ultrascreen now as a routine pregnancy check up. Im trying not to stress the test too much because he said it's routine. The link that you inserted says that the ultrascreen in the first trimester gives less false positives than a second trimester screen which IMO is a good thing. Try not stress...I'm sure your baby is fineChat Icon

I see no reason not to have the ultrascreen, as I cannot see where there can be any risk to it, you get to see your baby and you get information. However, I am a true believer that a doctor should give a choice because almost all testing is optional. So, I hope that your doctor at least gave you some sort of an opportunity to opt out. This is the lawyer in me speaking.

I'm pretty sure if I told him I would prefer not to have the test done he would have been fine with it. I actually want to have it done...I rather be informed if God forbid something is wrong. I can see your point thoughChat Icon

Sorry if I sounded rude. I am having this test, too and I really don't see a reason not to.

I deal with medical issues at my work and I don't like when clients tell me that their doctor said that they HAVE to have something done. In some cases, it is not something as simple as an ultrascreen and some patients don't do much research on their own. ETA: In some cases, the client may just be telling me in a way that makes me wonder if the doctor gave them a choice, but many doctors do explain all the options.

Re: Next ? What's the difference between an ultrascreen and a sonogram?

I think I'm a little confused by your post.

Everyone has the 20 week ultrascreen done, it's part of your regular check up.
In this screening, they measure the babies heart valves, kidneys, arm lengths/leg etc.. to make sure your baby is developing right on schedule.

*SOME* of the ultra screens will show something out of the ordinary and they'll want to send you for additional testing or suggest and amino etc.. That- I believe is your personal call.

Don't be worried about the 20 week ultra though.

It's not the 20 week, it's this 12 week tht I am hearing about. I wasn't even told about it.
