Nice place to live 60min to NYC?
Sorry you are leaving LI, I have relatives who live in Middletown, I am not sure how far it is from NYC but is a really nice area. Anywhere in Westchester is nice. I also have friends who are from the Sufferen area, nice there too. Good luck!

Nice place to live 60min to NYC?
Look at Croton Falls in Upper Westchester, also Brewster, Carmel, Mahopac in Putnam. Brewster has 2 Metro North stops- by train it's about 1 hr 20 to NYC. I used to take the train to the Bronx and it was a little longer because I had to transfer in White Plains. But it's a nice and easy commute and parking is easier than many LIRR stations. A lot of people commute to the city.
I am in the Brewster SD and I am pretty impressed with the district. There is very little shopping- you won't find a Hempstead Turnpike equivalent up here (which many people- me inlcuded- like) but I prefer the more rural feel. The people are very nice. There is quite a lot to do despite the lack of shopping. There are lots of good restaurants, though, and there is a good mall and lots of stores in Danbury, which is 15 minutes away.

Have you thought of coming to NJ. There are some really nice areas here too. Somerset and Morris Counties have nice homes and are about an hour from NYC. Alternatively Mahwah is nice too and closer...

Where in NYC are you going? I live in Rockland and can make it to midtown in about that time via public transportation and downtown via express train (those are limited) in about an hour and 15 minutes. DH works in the Bronx and it usually takes him less than an hour. There are definitely a number of homes within your price range.

I also reccomended Danbury/Ridgefield/ West Redding.
Danbury and Brewster are next to eachother.

Nice place to live 60min to NYC?
White Plains - 35 minutes to Grand central and 15 miles north of the Bronx
Scarlesdale, Larchmont and Mamaroneck are all good areas too.

Anywhere in upper Westchester is about an hour, or Putnam, or Southern Dutchess. My parents live in Hopewell Jct and it's an hour from the Bronx. You can totally find a beautiful house in that price range. In Westchester you can find a house in that price range, but it will most likely need some work.

I grew up in that area, family still lives there and IMHO the commute is way too far to even the Bronx.
Even areas around Monroe/Harriman which are right off the Thruway are pushing it.
The train is not direct either like the LIRR. You have to deal with going through Jersey.
More realistically, I have had friends commute to the city by bus from Middletown and the Monroe area.
Sorry I'm not more of a help. There are TONS of big, beautiful homes in that area in your price range, but from what I noticed, some people try to do the city commute, and then they end up right back on the market a few years later.
Instead, I would advise you consider areas across the river, in lower Dutchess and Putnam. The train is a little more direct into Grand Central.

Re: Nice place to live 60min to NYC?
It depends where you are going in Manhattan.
I have a 35 minute train ride (on a peak express train), but my whole commute is about 70-75 minutes, so I won't really go any farther north than I am. I won't bother recommending my town, since I like it, but it isn't a great school district form what I hear, and most houses are a little out of your price range.
