Nikki Reed in Marie Claire (December '08)
WHY SHE’S ON OUR RADAR: Reed, 20, plays the gorgeous but bitchy Rosalie in the big-screen adaptation of the best-selling vampire series Twilight.
AS SEEN IN: Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, The O.C.
HER SHTICK: With an autobiographical script she cowrote in just six days, Reed solidified her rebellious rep in Thirteen as a sexy bad girl willing to do anything, say anything, and take anything — except advice from an authority figure.
NETHERWORLDS: Los Angeles native Reed related to her undead character in Twilight. “There’s a parallel to playing someone who’s not exactly human and living a life that doesn’t always feel human here in Hollywood. This is all fantasyland.”
GROWING PAINS: “I had a full-on quarter-life crisis when I turned 20. I lost my mind. For years I’d been spontaneous — I would pick up and go when I wanted. I once almost married a ballet dancer in Russia. I was so used to being able to say, ‘I’m young, let me make mistakes.’ Now I feel like 20 is so far from 19 — people expect things from you.”
BEST FRIENDS FOREVER?: “I’ve had a few rude awakenings on-set. You go on location for months and hang out with the few people around you who you feel safe with, who are your costars. But then you walk away at the end of filming and never see them again. It was honestly devastating to me.”
WRITER’S BLOCK: “I write, but it’s difficult, because people go, ‘That’s cool, but do you think that you could try Thirteen for TV, or Thirteen: The Sequel, or Mean Girls 7?’ Nobody wants to hear stories of mine that aren’t nonfiction."
