Nikon Lens- AF NIKKOR 50mm or 25MM? Experts come in!
I want one - doing research now and trying to see where I can get one at the best price. Esp since DH is getting it for me for Christmas.
Which one do you recommend?

i have the 50mm and love it. got mine from adorama when it came out and it was cheap.

Depends on what your shooting.
I mean it depends on your camera body type Full Frame Sensor vs Crop Sensor and what speed your lens is - F-stop. You will get more flexibility with a 50MM on average for your short answer.

Thank you for starting this thread! I am getting one for my bday and I have decided on a 50mm 1.8D. The only drawback is the AF doesn't work with the D60 with this camera. But I figured it is inexpensive and I could really use the manual focus practice. I can't wait to get mine!
Definitely check what is compatible with your camera.

I believe with the D40's and D60's, the lens won't autofocus - I know mine is a f/1.4D, but I have a D50 camera that it autofocuses with. I believe you will need the 50 mm AF-S lens (f/1.4G), and someone can correct me if I am wrong!
This lens will work and autofocus with your camera

ETA: I use f/1.4 as an example since that is what I have, but the f/1.8s are very good also and much cheaper.

You're correct!
D40's and D60's are compatible only with AF-S lenses. If you have a D60 or a D40, you would need to either get the 50MM 1.4 or manually focus the 50MM 1.8

I am a bit confused now. I was planning on getting a Nikon 50mm 1.8d AF, b/c the price is what I can afford now. How difficult will manual focusing be? Will this work (in manual) with a D60 or D40?
If I want the autofocus, do I need the 50mm 1.4d or the 50mm 1.4g?
All these letters get me confused. 
I am pretty new to SLRs and I would like to focus (pun intended) on manually focusing as I am not that great at it.

i have to say in many years of photography i only used manual focus on average 3x's a year and usually on macro. When I did have my first camera in HS we were not allow to used auto focus and that was over 10 years ago.
Remember this is not a lens you can just quickly take a shot with, you have to take the time to fine focus so if your expecting to fire away find a lens that is going to auto focus.

You'll get more use out of the normal lens, but I think you should stick to ones that are compatible for AF.
