Nikon question for the Mommies
I wanted a Nikon D40 for Christmas this year.
I was wondering if I should get the one with the 18-55mm lens or the 18-135 mm lens.
Would I really need a super-zoom lens? I'd rather have just one lens that I always use, and not have to change them or anything.
Which one do you have, and do you like it?

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I have a Nikon D50, with a 28-80 mm and a 70-300 mm lens. 90% of the time, especially indoors, I use the 28-80 and its fine. The 70-300 is huge, heavy but is great when I am outdoors for that kind of range.
That said, I would love to get a middle range lens, like the 18-135 or the 200 mm lens.
I guess I didn't answer your question, huh

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I have the 18-135 lens and love that I can use it to get close up pictures of my DD without her knowing. I love the candids of her busy playing. If I had to come in closer she'd start to react to the camera.

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I have the D40 and it came with the 18-55mm and I was contemplating getting the double lense package and decided against it and now I wish I did. Their are times (like yesterday at the zoo) that you want to take pictures like Calla said and you don't want them to know.

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
i only have one lens, the 18-200, but i find it is great for inside AND outside- i never have to switch to get closer up or switch because im too close....
i do eventually want the 80-400 (i think thats the one- or ist 70-400, but its def a 400)- but that lens is like $1500 and i dont really need it until my little girl gets into soccer or dancing or whatever she is going to do....
good luck!

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I have the 18-55, 18-135 and the 70-300.
I don't really use the 18-55 just b/c I have toddlers. Lets face it, they're not going to let you come that close
I switch between the 135 and the 300 lenses - around the house and yard I'll use the 135 and sometimes on shoots with newborns. Park pics, beach pics, or anything else where there is room to run w/o a doubt the 300.
The 300 obviously weighs the most but I'm used to it - most important thing is that you are comfortable.

I would definately get the 18-135. I got the 18-55 and now I really want the 135.

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I just got the D40 and the lense that comes with it is fine for me. I have not seen the other lense and what it could do. I bet if I do see it, I'd want that too...

I have the 28-80, 70-300mm and the 18-200mm (thanks to all of you! ).
I would go for the 18-200mm.
The 70-300mm lens is too close up for indoor shots. The 28-80mm is great but you won't get the close-up shots that you're looking for as your kids get older.
The 18-200mm gives you the best of both worlds.

Re: Nikon question for the Mommies
I think if you only want to carry and use one lens.. 18-135 is better over the 18-55, more range you know?

If you can't get the 18-200mm, go for the 18-135mm.
