Nikon SLR Owners - What is the perfect lens for photographing kids?
I'm thinking about the D80, which doesn't come with a lens. Is there one perfect starter lens I can buy for taking pictures of my toddler and newborn?

Just thought I'd give this another try today to see if I could catch someone...
Is the VR in the 18-200 lens really worth the huge price jump from the 18-135?

From asking around and when I went to the camera store it seems like you really do use both lenses all the time. This is my dilema. I know they sell a 2 lense package for the D40 and it is around $799. I think I might go that route but I want to check out the prices of the larger lense first. You do need a lense with a motor on it if you go with the Nikon so I don't know if it will be more to buy it seperatly (this what the guy at the camera store told me. The Canon's have the motor for the auto focus in the camera body).

Not sure if you're set on the D80 for a reason but I thought I'd mention that the D50 comes with a really good standard lens that will be more than enough to get you by for now and you can add more sophisticated lenses later.

I had thought the D50 was discontinued (and replaced by the D40)?

I have an old 300mm lens on mine. My next lens is the 18-200mm.

From what I read it is worth it. We're looking into that lens so that we don't have to lug around 2 lenses but I'm not an expert so I can't give the best advice.

That's the reason I want it. In order to get photos with the 300mm lens, I need to step back or change lens because I'm too close.

Re: Nikon SLR Owners - What is the perfect lens for photographing kids?
Thanks everyone for your really useful input. I went to the camera store today to play with the different models... I thought I was going to want the D80 but my hands are so small I could barely curl my fingers around the front of the camera (I had to get wedding rings custom made because I'm below the smallest adult size for rings...) The D40x felt so much more comfortable for me to hold. I know I'd be supporting it with a second hand, but one more factor for me to consider!

Re: Nikon SLR Owners - What is the perfect lens for photographing kids?
Well i've just ordered the Nikon D40x with the 18-135mm lens .
I'm just not ready for the extra $500 in cost for the 18-200mm lens, although the VR does sound great!
Thanks so much for all of your advice, I really appreciate your insights!

I think you'll be happy with that lens for the time being. Remember that with lenses of larger focal ranges there are still sacrifices in other areas. With that type of lens VR will pay off.
I know what you mean about the expensive hobby though - I already got my SB-800 and have my next 4 four or so photography purchases already lined up.

I have the D80 and it came with 2 lenses. One regular, and one really zoom one. (I forget the specs). I love it.
