NJ Moms and Maternity Leave
I remember hearing that NJ passed a law that you can extend maternity leave (if your company allows).
Anyone familiar with this? One girl in my office had off for 4 months here in NJ. When I was on maternity leave with DS on LI it was 12 weeks, but now that I live in NJ I was wondering if there's something different.

Re: NJ Moms and Maternity Leave
there are people who can explain it better - but so long as your company (or dh's) pays into the program thing (i think it's a form of disability) - you can get bonding time with your baby - any time during their first year of life.
it's up to 6 weeks and can be taken in 1 chunk (i did that) or 1 week at a time...

eta: i took this time, but dave's company does NOT qualify (naturallly).

Just saw this..
Erica - New Jersey has a law that went into effect 7/1/09 called , NJFLI. You can apply to receive up to 6 weeks of compensation from the state (roughly 2/3 of your salary). It does NOT provide job protection - through the FEDERAL FMLA. NJ also has FLA - I believe this provides 12 weeks of uncompensated job protection over a 24 month period and runs concurrently with the Federal FMLA.
When I had Tommy in 8/09, this is how it worked:
Through my company, I was paid short term disability for 8 weeks (c-section). Then I applied for the NJFLI and received 6 additional weeks of compensation. For JOB PROTECTION, I was covered for a total of 12 weeks.
So, I was out for 14 weeks total, but was paid through a combo of my company and then the state through 12 weeks (last 2 weeks were unpaid).
Make sense? FM me if you have Qs

Re: NJ Moms and Maternity Leave
OK, I was just out when I had my DD starting back in December 2009 and into 2010.
It worked as follows:
Weeks 1-6 Short Term Disability paid at 100% through my company PLUS first 6 weeks of unpaid FMLA
Weeks 7-12 - last 6 weeks of unpaid FMLA PLUS first 6 weeks of NJFLA (NJ Family Leave Act).... very similar to the FMLA and it runs concurrently, however it does not start until AFTER your STD ends. I was paid for 6 weeks from the state of NJ under the new law of NJ Family Leave Insurance.
Weeks 13-18 - Last 6 weeks of NJFLA... unpaid leave
So, basically I was out for 18 weeks with my DD. I was only out for 12 weeks with my DS because I was not aware of the NJFLA at the time. Nobody really tells you about it... you have to figure it out for yourself! Let me know if you have any questions.
ETA: I was out for 18 weeks because I had a vaginal delivery. Had it been a c-section, it would have been 20 weeks as you get 2 extra weeks of STD with that delivery type.
