I think it was unprofessional of anyone to reprimand you in front of anyone else. But out of respect, I think you should have given your supervisor a heads up about seeking the transfer.

ITA with this but to be reprimanded in front of everyone that was not good. I was in your shoes about trying for another position with the company i was with. I asked my supervisor if it was ok and also to let him know I was going to try for a different position and he was all for it. He thanked me for letting him know and he also wrote a letter of recommendation on my behalf to give to HR. Needless to say I didn't get the position so he was happy to still have me.
I would have took your supervisor aside and let them know what you were doing just in case you did get the job. Remember she has to fill your shoes which sometimes is not easy and it would be nice to get a heads up.
