No Baby Experience (funny story) and an added freak out down the thread
Yesterday I was talking to DH about having no experience with babies at all. We both barely ever even held a baby. I mean we will get used to it, we have no choice about that, but the changing diaper thing freaks us out a bit. Anyway... we got a free sample of a Huggies newborn diaper so we decided to open the package and try it out on a teddy bear! It was so cute!
Anyone else have zero experience with babies?

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
my DH had NO experience with babies until our daughter was born and let me tell you it was FUNNY!!! her first BM in the hospital was just too funny it was 3 am and she needed to be changed so there were are at the end of the hospital bed i took off her diaper and she was still going. well my poor DH jumped back like 5 feet and yelled OMG WHAT THE F*@K IS THAT????? so loud and he was so upset that i started to laugh i was nearly in tears when the nurse came in to make sure we were ok (she heard hin down the hall!!) I had warned him but i guess when you see your darling daughter pooing stuff that looks likes roof tar you may get upset! LOL

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I have been around babies a lot but I have been mostly sheltered from the diaper thing. I just never volunteered to help with diapers and there was always someone around who was willing. I tried once to change a really bad diaper when my niece was sick. I was overcome by the smell.
I am great with kids from the ages of about 4-9 and I have worked with that age.
I plan to take at least one parenting class before this child is born. I am sure that is is obvious that I need to.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
The both of us have never changed a diaper or been left alone with a baby. Maybe we should put web cams around the house so you can all laugh at us.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I had absolutely no experience with babies, and I have to say the diaper thing actually turns out to be the easy part.
The much harder part is figuring out how to get the little bugger to sleep. Whoever started the phrase "sleeping like a baby" had a strange sense of humor.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I had 0 experence with babies and then i had 2 at once. It just comes naturally. It's true what they say a mothers instinct you are like a lion protecting your cub.. Plus your peditrician is helpful and learn as much as you can while you are still in the hospital after you deliver.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I didn't until my nephew was born in October. I haven't changed a diaper on him or ever in my life! I could see myself practicing on a teddy bear too!!

That is cute.
I have 0 experience with babies too, and that's what scares me. I know they say "Motherly-Instinct" kicks in, but I'm afraid it won't.
I posted yesterday asking about good books and one particular area I was asking was on Baby Care for a book that shows diagrams on topics, bathing, feeding, etc.
Do they have classes on things like this? If so where? I'm in Queens.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I have TONS of experience with babies...I babysat a lot as a teen and my sister was born when I was 10.
Oddly, DH has hardly any experience with BABIES and he's the oldest of 4. He has experience with kids, he's awesome with kids...but I think a baby freaks him out some. He already thinks he is NOT changing diapers....
It will come to you more naturally than you'd think...but don't be afraid to ask ANYONE for help/advice etc... As "trained" as I felt I was when DD was born, there were still a few things here and there I had to ask about that I never would've known what to do!

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story)
I would have to say the diaper changing and the bathing of a teeny tiny infant freaks me out the most. I mean, do you use wipes, powder and butt paste stuff? How tight do you make the diaper? Why would you need baby oil? How do you hold a baby in the bath when it cant hold even its head up?

I had the exact same freak out earlier in my pregnancy.
Turned out week one of my childbirthing classes was all about this stuff and they even let you practice.
If your doctor doesn't offer classes maybe your hospital does?
And Babies R Us does everynow and then too.
Lots of time to read up and practice!!

Breathe girl, breathe!~
OK the infant baths are shaped to hold the baby in the right position, and a few companies make baths that have removable infant inserts so that they can be used into later infancy.
As far as the diaper thing, maybe post & ask some of the BTDT moms on the parenting board about their experiences. I know that everyone has their own opinion on what & when & how much to use of what, so maybe their input will help you!

There are infant tub things that keep your child upright while bathing. I have no idea what they are really called, but I know what they look like.

There is also an infant sling to use in the tub. The baby "sticks" to it.

Is this the type of bath/sling thing you are talking about?

I asked DH if he ever changed a diaper. He said yes. So I asked him if the tape goes in the front or the back. He didnt get it right. Oh well, I guess I will have to tutor him in the diapering arts when the time comes.

Re: No Baby Experience (funny story) and an added freak out down the thread
I had virtually NO experience with babies--I'm just not a "baby person" in general. You really have nothing to worry about--you'll see! I think I changed about 3 diapers in my life before DD, and anyway, as someone else said...that is so the least of the problem! Anyway, if you have a c/s like I did, DH is going to have to change the first few anyway
You're going to see how comfortable you both are almost instantly--it really is incredible!

this is exactly how I felt and I freaked out - at my shower one of my friends got me a "manual"
really believe me, I knew nothing about babies and was freaked out about it!!!! you just do what you feel is right - and everyone will give you advice (wanted and unwanted)
