No bowel movements...Advice please

DS did not make a bowel movement yesterday nor today yet. I called the ped and he said wait until tomorrow and buy suppositories if he doesn't poop by then.

Is it ok for them to go one or two days without pooping?

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

I don't know if it is okay or not, but from what they told me when my DS was in the NICU for a week, they should be going every day. If they aren't it may be a sign they aren't digesting the food. My DS wasn't digesting right for the first few days he was born, but it corrected itself, which the NICU doctor says happens pretty often.

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

My DD had difficulties with pooping for a while as well. My ped told me not to be too concerned until day 4 of no bowel movement. He said if DD had wet diapers and was passing gas that she wasn't constipated. I also used the suppositories though when she went 4 days without pooping a couple of times. My ped recommended cutting the suppository in half lengthwise. It was always enough to get things moving. Did your ped recommend giving DC water? That often gets the bowels kicked into gear too. Just be careful if you use the suppositories; from what I understand a baby's body will quickly get used to "something" making it poop. So don't overuse the suppositories.

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

If you are BFing it is not uncommon for DC to not have a BM every day.

For a month or 2 there my DS went 1-2 times a week. Then we started solids and he's been fighting my stomach flu so it's now 2-3x/day! Chat Icon

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

Hope this helps...I went thru such turmoil for nothing.

1-Follow Ped's advice, if nothing in 4 days, suppository.

2-Thermometer, doesnt' always work.

3-Of ALL the research I have done, which is alot in the last 2-3 weeks, infant constipation is classified by the CONSISTENCY not the FREQUENCY of bowl movements. If your DC is having BM every other day (which is VERY common in FF babies) and it's still mushy, he/she should be ok.

If you want to know more on my experience, please FM. It's a long story and I posted bits of it here and there, but didn't get much response.

Oh yes - I spoke to the ped. a lot because I was convinced Cailen was constipated because he was straining so much - but the ped. said they arent consitpated unless their poops are very hard, so even straining with no poop is not considered constipation.

also, he said that babies do not poop everyday - sometimes they wont go for a day or 2, but as long as they produce wet diapers, not to be concerned. He also said that they make up for it in the next few days - so look out!!! Chat Icon

Same here. It always worked well for us. I would try the water before I used the thermometer or a suppository.

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

Water doesn't seem to help DS at all. We've tried and tried without any luck. The suppositories always seem to do the trick. We cut them in half though and my ped said there's no issue using them when in need.

Ainsley went about 36 hours without a bowel movement when we first brought her home - DH and I kept checking her diaper every 10 minutes - when she finally did go - DH woke me up to tell me!

He'll go - and then there will be days where he'll go 6 times a day!

Re: No bowel movements...Advice please

DS was like that in the beginning also... He didn't poop for 3 days my ped said to put Karo syrup the dark one in his bottle 2x a day about 1/2 to 1 tsp in each to see if that works.. It may take a day or two but it did work so we did not have to use supp..but it is ok for them to go without pooping for a day or two.
