No weight gain from week 2 to 3
So I had a lactation consultant come for a home vist today and has not gained any weight in a week and 2 days since his last doctor's visit.
This coincides exactly with my plugged duct issues and all my BF issues from the past week. the consultant thinks that my milk supply has gone down and that has really bad latching techniques along with a short tongue.
She re-taught me the correct latching techiques and showed me the SNS to supplement.
I was so happy she came so now I know what I need to do. I had taken a BF class before was born and they were so gung ho about no supplementing and about how it would teach the baby bad techniques. I felt so guilty about going to formula. It was so nice to meet with someone who said "hey, that makes no sense, if BF is not working for you and is not gaining weight, then you absolutely have to supplement".
She gave me great options on how to improve his nursing, but now, I feel fine about formula feeding since it's what I need to do to ensure that my child is healthy and growing.
I'm so happy I didn't wait any longer and jeopardize his health and relieved that the pressure is off for me to solely BF.

I am glad to hear you feel better about this! The breast feeding classes, la leche league, etc. can be really unrealistic sometimes. You have to do what you feel is best for your own child.

I'm not surprised to hear that your DS had a bad latch. I'm glad you are feeling better about the situation. It doesn't have to be all or nothing - you can always BF part time and FF part time. Whatever works for you and DS!

I felt the same pressure myself- I even thought of formula as "posion"! But I couldn't make enough milk, no matter what I did. Many breast feeding advocate kept making me feel like I wasn't doing enough but then the lactaction consultant I found down my block said, it doesn't work for everyone- you did your best.
Sometimes it just doesn't work and you need to supplement- you are doing everything to make sure he has your breastmilk- supplementing is NOT a big deal

There's nothing wrong with supplementing with formula. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty! Meanwhile, I'm still pumping away into bottles because DS never learned to latch properly!
