Non refundable booking through travel sites
Has anyone booked a nonrefundable hotel? I see a lot of hotels give a cheaper rate if you book and pay up front and it is non refundable. I am seeing this more and more. Maybe it was always like this and I never noticed. I am trying to book a trip and on Expedia it is so much cheaper per night but non refundable and I am so nervous about that. Most my trips I book, I can cancel a few days before or a couple of weeks. The hotel offers a less price to pay up front and no refund, and Expedia over $100 cheaper per night. Not sure I should take the chance. We just got back from fla and paid extra to be able to cancel and didnt take the cheaper rate, but it wasn't alot more per night. This is a lot more of a difference.

I have done it but, only when it's substantially less and I am 100% sure I will be going.

Is there a reason you think you might have to cancel? You could get travel insurance if you think the reason you may have to cancel is something that would be covered by the insurance.

I never cancel my trips, but I guess I just worry about an emergency. By doing this, I am saving over $100 per night, so I have to take the chance.

ditto! especially in situations like europe, where i already booked the flight, i have booked the nonrefundable b/c its pretty clear i will not be changing my mind and im going. and if something were to come up, id be more upset about the lost cost of the flight than the hotel, kwim

If you get travel insurance and have to cancel for an emergency, it would likley be covered by the insurance - even if the trip was "non-refundable". The price of the insurance would probably be a lot less than the amount you would save by booking the trip the cheaper way.

Where do you get travel insurance if you're booking on your own?

The only company I know of is Travel Guard (travelguard.com), but I'm sure if you google it you can find others.
