Nonfiction topics... need ideas, please!

I need ideas for my 7th graders for nonfiction topics they could research and write about.

They are in special ed and mostly on a 3rd and 4th grade reading level.

Any ideas?

My ideas so far: The Titanic

Discrimination/Segregation

Re: Nonfiction topics... need ideas, please!

my sp. ed. kids in 5th grade enjoyed things like:

The Moon/Space, Exotic Animals, etc. I find they love hearing about things like that are true, but to them seem impossible. (like how many miles it is to the sun, that kind of thing).

Also, i break-up my non-fiction unit into different genres within non-fiction:
biographies
auto-biographies
articles (usually out of a magazine)
trade books

the biographies are fascinating to them because they pick who they want (I choose level though). then from there, sometimes i can let it lead to the next type of non-fiction book. for example, a kid fascinated by weather once read a book about hurricanes, which led to an article about Katrina, which lead to him choosing Louisiana for his state report project.

What about an art study? You can do bios, styles of art, etc. I have done this in the past and the kid love it. It helps that it's a topic that is good for the kids who are more visual. If you are interested I can send more ideas.

biographies can pull into curriculum

animals (for life sciences?)

health

specific dog breeds

Can you ask your librarian to pull low level high interest non fiction books for you and you can use those resources to help you find topics (and then each student can check that book out to research)

I just did a topic on Egypt with my first graders! They loved it... the setting of the action in Transformers! They felt a connection-ha! I loved it and so did they. If you want the lessons, let me know--they are TC!

I would do something like Animals, Space, Biographies, or countries like others have suggested. What are they interested in?

Re: Nonfiction topics... need ideas, please!

Wow thank you SOOO much everyone! I am sorry I didn't respond sooner. I was browsing through everyone's ideas (and they were all great so, THANK YOU!! Chat Icon ) but then it came to me.......

I decided to make my NF unit about the Holocaust.

Which leads to my next post which I will be making shortly. If anyone has any ideas for a unit on the Holocaust (lessons... suggestions... etc) I would GREATLY appreciate it!! I am open to suggestions on any grade level because I can always modify it to fit the level of my students (middle school special ed)
