North Shore vs. South Shore..opinions
O.K., so we are thinking of expanding our search from the South Shore Nassau to include North Shore Suffolk.
In particular; Northport, Huntington and Centerport.
South Shore
Pros...
It is the only area I have ever lived in, and am familiar with it.
Easy to get to major roads.
Beaches have waves and no rocks
Cons.... Don't have any
North Shore
Pros....
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful
I love the style of many of the homes.
I love the idea of having a town with a Main Street.
I love the feeling of "community" that you get in those towns.
Cons...
Far from major roads..ei.. Southern State, MeadowBrook, Sunrise
Far from all family and friends..(BIG one)
So, what do you think??????

I live on the North SHore but in western nassau. We're close to everything. A big thing for me was staying near our parents.... so I would vote on the South Shore for you since it's closer to your family.

It really depends on WHERE. When I lived near Hunt. Village, it did take almost 20 minutes to get to the parkway. In Centerport, it took about 15. In Northport (actually Fort Salonga), it took me 3 minutes. I still easily hop on SM Parkway and can hit NS, LIE, SS in minutes.
I'd move back in a heartbeat!

Depends who you ask. My FIL says the north shore is so much better in every aspect of the world. I say each place has its pros and cons and don't mind looking in both places until we find a home. The town is secondary.

I am a South Shore Girl at heart, I grew up in Oakdale and love it there. It sounds like you would love the town of Sayville! Main Street, old town feel, close to Sunrise Hwy and Southern State

Re: North Shore vs. South Shore..opinions
I grew up on the North Shore of Suffolk in Smithtown. I loved it. I swore I'd be a North Shore girl my entire life and would never live on the South Shore. I felt like the NS was so much more secluded and beautiful, but as we started to look at houses, I actually found myself leaning towards the SS communities more. I never thought I'd live on the SS. My whole family always said they'd always be NS people for all the reasons I stated, plus some, but we're all in love with teh SS now. I love the canals near the water, I think there's a better sense of community down here, I think the arts are very important in many of the SS communities I know of, I love the small towns on the SS, I love the beaches and the fact that I can WALK to a Fire Island Ferry, and in general, I just feel like it's a little more laid back on the SS. It could just be my own personal experiences, but I really love the SS. Isn't it funny how people on Long Island tend to label themselves NS or SS? For a long time I thought it was just my family that identified ourselves that way, but now that I have had some discussions with friends and colleagues, everyone has their preference.

Re: North Shore vs. South Shore..opinions
I'm a north shore girl too! I grew up in Kings Park and now i live in Manhasset. Depending on where you are on the north shore you may or may not be close to major roads. However, it's not like there are no stores around. Huntington village has a ton and Walt Whitman mall is right there.
Personally I just think that the north shore is much prettier than the south shore, but I would love to be really close to the ocean beach which you can't get on the north shore. the beaches here, while pretty, are not great for swimming. I think that both have pro's and cons. it's just such a personal decision.

Re: North Shore vs. South Shore..opinions
I lived on the North Shore for several years.
North Shore: Close to water Nice houses $$$$ Close to major roads but depends WHERE on the north shore. By Elwood/Northport it will take you a while to go to a major road that is not busy. Huntington village is very busy with cars. Glen Cove takes 15 minutes to go to a major road.
South Shore: Ocean I feel it's not as "remote" as the North Shore. More affordable than North Shore depending on the area Depending on the town, it can be "packed" with cars going to the beach.
