Not parent related: Oil heat prices
I think our oil company is scamming us but I wanted to check w/ you guys (especially anyone in Westchester and upstate) - we got a bill around Oct 30th for $420. Yikes but OK, could be worse and I paid it. We just had them put in some more oil last week and now we got ANOTHER bill for over $400 AGAIN! So we're shelling out $800+ in the space of two months! I only paid the bill mid-November - feels like I just wrote it out.
We called the co. today to ask if it was a mistake and they said no we are averaging about 4 gallons a day. Average for homes this time of year is 6-7 gallons. Does that seem right to anyone? I have no idea we always had gas heat growing up and I have no idea what my dad paid for it not that that would be an indicator. What's your oil bill like this time of year?

Who are you using? I know we live near each other- from what I recall last year we didn't pay anything near that. We locked in at 2.09 last year but are paying 2.61 this year. When they come we pay about $300 for them to top off the tank, but they don't come every month.

Wow that's good. I live up in lower Putnam County near the Hudson so our temps are about 5-10 degrees cooler than NYC and Long Island, but it's not freezing daily either. I don't know I just thought it was alot of money for 2 months.

Wow!! I pay 12 months out of the year so I don't have huge bills all at once. I am currently paying $140/month. We use Marran Oil in Holtsville.

Re: Not parent related: Oil heat prices
We pay $1.89 a gallon. So far between Sept and Friday we used a little bit less than 200 gallons. Our system is a year old. This has been a very mild fall/winter. IMO, using 5 to 6 gallons for the weather we have been having, is a lot.
How old is your burner?
How big is your house?
Are you home during the day?
Do you have programmable thermostats?
It's very difficult to compare oil prices to heat homes because all of the oil companies charge different rates, burners can range in efficiency quite a bit depending upon age, and all of our homes are different sizes, layouts.
It's not so much how much you are paying each month, it's the efficiency of your system, therefore how much oil you are using compared to your neighbors.
I hope that helps. I would definitely be questioning the age of your system. That might be the biggest contributing factor.

I know that some of the windows don't have storm windows on them, I think DH took off the ones he could because...he just did. I don't knwo why. He's not from this country and it's not terribly cold in Ireland in the winter (at least not when he lived there) and I dont' think they ever had storm windows in his house so I guess he figured why do we have them here. He does that a lot - compares there to here and thinks we should do/have the same. I try to tell him to check w/ me first but he feels I'm "double checking" him all the time...... So that could mean half the house is drafty. I know one bedroom is. I have asked him about 50 times to bleed the radiator (baseboard) - but now he says he's not sure it can be bled since it is a baseboard and he's not sure, etc. I've been askng him since OCTOBER...
We also have a fireplace and I'm sure that would cut down on some heating but not in the bedrooms and we can't heat up one room and not the others.
We don't have a programmable thermostat but I'm giong to get one I think.
I want to turn the heat down during the day but I don't know how low I can go w/o completely shutting it off.
Thanks for the tips!

Re: Not parent related: Oil heat prices
I'm in the Hudson Valley,
I paid $2.34 on 10/06 a full tank and then $2.34 on 11/27 for about a 1/2 tank (much below our lock in price of $2.89)
they came again so soon for me because they miscalculated my auto delivery and in Oct we ran out of oil. I probably wouldn't have need it til December since its been so warm.
I get a little discount for paying within 10 days.
I am also home all day so I use more oil.
ETA: we got a new boiler 3 years ago.

defintely get one of these, they are easy to install too if DH is at all handy.
You can turn the heat down to 55 degees safely when you are not there.

Re: Not parent related: Oil heat prices
I filled up my tank September 28 and haven't had an oil delivery since. I still have more than half tank left. The weather has been too warm to warrant the use of alot of oil. I won't be calling for an oil delivery until at least the end of January. My oil burner is over 10 years old and runs efficiently. This is why I don't like contracts. I call for oil when I need it; not when they think I need it. I, also, pay a lower rate per gallon and have my burner serviced by an independent company.
