Now he's going after Australia

Does he wake up, grab a globe, spin it and put his finger on it randomly (it's a tiny globe, for his tiny hands... Chat Icon Chat Icon ), and decide that's the country he's going to piss off today?

WASHINGTON — A phone call between President Trump and the Australian prime minister is threatening to develop into a diplomatic rift between two stalwart allies after the two men exchanged harsh words over refugee policy, and Mr. Trump abruptly ended the call.

The phone call last Saturday between Mr. Trump and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull turned contentious after the Australian leader pressed the president to honor an agreement to accept 1,250 refugees from an Australian detention center.

Late Wednesday night, Mr. Trump reiterated his anger over the agreement on Twitter. He called the agreement a “dumb deal” and blamed the Obama administration for accepting it but then said that he would “study” it. The tweet was posted after The Washington Post reported details of the phone call.
Donald J. Trump ? @realDonaldTrump
Do you believe it? The Obama Administration agreed to take thousands of illegal immigrants from Australia. Why? I will study this dumb deal!
10:55 PM - 1 Feb 2017

The flare-up — and conflicting characterizations of the call from Mr. Trump and Mr. Turnbull — threatened to do lasting damage to relations between the two countries and could drive Canberra closer to China, which has a robust trading relationship with Australia and is competing with Washington to become the dominant force in the Asia-Pacific region.

A senior Trump administration official said the president told Mr. Turnbull on Saturday that the refugees could include the “next Boston bombers.” He also said he was “going to get killed” politically by the deal, given that the day before he signed an executive order to stem the refugee flow into the United States and refuse visas for all citizens from seven Muslim countries.

The Trump administration official said the call was shorter than planned, and ended abruptly after Mr. Turnbull told the president it was necessary for the refugees to be accepted.

Re: Now he's going after Australia

I was just going to post this!

He's such an idiot.

Granted, Australia should take their refugees (they are another country that has the same politics of no refugees), there was already a deal in place. We should honor that deal.

Australia is one of our biggest allies. They do a lot for us and have gone along with everything we have done in the last 10-20 years. Why he wants to alienate them boggles me.

I saw this list night. There is no one he can't find a way to go after. And his tweets this morning to Iran are horrendous.

He's been in office 2 weeks and he's ruining the US relationship with allies. He's going to end up alienating the US and we'll be in big trouble when we have a threat

I will take the media reports on how harsh the conversation was and the details of what was said with a grain of salt, but I happen to agree it was a bad deal. There is a reason that these countries don't want the refugees. Why should we be the ones to have to take them? I would be curious what we got out of this "deal". I won't have time to research today at work so if anyone knows, please share.

These refugees have already been vetted and in Nauru for 4 years. Look up conditions for Nauru. I have a friend that did a lot of work there and the conditions are awful.

Obama made a deal. If you want to know what's included in this deal, research what Australia has done for the US, especially during the Iraq War.

Turnbull sucks, but the deal needs to be honored.

That said, my DH is fuming. As are the rest of my Australian friends on FB.

I think Trump is within his right as current President to renegotiate deals Obama made, and even pull out of them altogether. But he has zero diplomacy skills.

I find the Australian chat the least troubling- threatening to send troops to Mexico is just ridiculous. You could make an argument that American demand for their drugs is part of the issue so maybe that should be addressed too. Also calling out Iran the way they did- again, not unwarranted because Iran is a problem- but it seems like these things are going forth with little thought for consequences.

And there is still Russia's aggression against Ukraine, which isn't getting addressed.

So are we basically sitting ducks? As Trump continues to piss off our allies and rile up our enemies are we waiting for a terrorist attack or who is going to stand up and say "enough" and kick him out of office?

From what I've read Australia has no issues with the US doing their own vetting process. If they don't pass theN they don't come.

It's not like this deal just happened it was announced in November so for Trump to have a conversation with the Australian PM last weekend and then now tweet that he has to look at this dumb deal makes us look dumb.

Yes, that's correct that they have no issues with the US doing their own vetting process.

The thing is Australia blindly supports the US. I don't think they are going to do that anymore now. It's all over the papers there and it's not positive.

I haven't heard such delightful things about Australia and their PM or their immigration process, but should we be getting rid of allies?

Yeah, we shouldn't be getting rid of our allies.

Australia will take refugees, but not by boat. From the way DH explained, the government didn't want people to think they could be let in under unsafe (traveling by boat) conditions, so they made "boat people" not eligible to seek asylum. They opened up two islands, which are not in good condition for these "boat people." These are "boat people" refugees that were in the deal made with Obama. He agreed to take them if they pass vetting procedures.

There are about 1200 refugees with quite a few of them stateless, and they have been there for four years. You have to be in the country to apply for asylum. By putting them on these islands, they have avoided them from applying for asylum (I hope I have explained that coherently).

Honestly, Australia should have taken them in in the first place, but they made a deal with Obama. That was agreed upon last year, and these refugees were even included in the EO to be excluded. It doesn't help that Habanero Hitler has tweeted that it was a "dumb" deal. So, yeah, alienating your allies is not a good idea.
