Now that I survived my first trip on yet another LI parkway.....
What is the deal with curbs one foot from the lane? Is there a reason?
Not too fun in the flooding rain.

Not sure why but there could be a couple reasons. From a design aspect it could be to keep speeds down. The closer the curb is to the road the slower you are supposed to go.
They could also have wanted to keep the area as natural as possible and have as little paved area as needed.
If I could find my highway design and construction book I could look it up but I can't for the life of me remember where I put it. I am not being obnoxious I really do have the book
