Now what?
I am so upset. We had an accepted application and deposit down for a labradoodle. She accepted 6 reservations, but there was an unusually small litter of only five puppies. And we were the last reservation. The first two choices go to the breeders and then the other three families. We are so disappointed.  We were supposed to get our puppy the first weekend in August.
We have a couple of options right now, none are really ideal. The litter that delivered before ours was larger then expected so we can get one of those puppies. But they aren't the color that we wanted, and we would have to pick them up earlier then expected and would have to cancel our 10 year anniversary trip to Aruba. Even given The unfortunately circumstances, we would still be last pick, with a good chance of winding up with a puppy that's pretty far off from what we wanted.
We found another breeder much closer to home. She has two dogs that will deliver in August, we would get them in October. She doesn't seem quite as established as the original breeder, though I couldn't find any bad reviews or anything like that. Again, the puppies will probably not be our ideal color. But she would let us wait until both litters are born to decide which we prefer.
We could stick with our original breeder who plans on breeding two reds in December, which is our top color choice. But they won't be born until March, probably not coming home until April or May.
What would you go with? Like I said, none of our options are ideal, we're just trying to see what is best for our family. And we really don't know at this point. My boys were crying they were so upset about not getting a dog this sumner. We put our deposit down in mate April, so we've been talking about our puppy and picking names for a while now. We gad no idea it was even a possibility that we wouldn't be getting one as planned.

If coat color is important I would wait for the breeder you are currently working with to breed her dogs in December but with genetics there is guarantee the pups will be exactly what you want. Under no circumstances should you cancel your vacation- wasn't one of your husband's reasons for not wanting a dog sooner not wanting to be tied down by having a dog?

Yup. And that's why we purposely planned all of our summer trips for June and July so that we would have all August to focus on house training the puppy. And we had no trips on the horizon for the fall or winter.
I explained this to the breeder and she said said they could hold the dog until our original pick up date, but they would charge us $20 a day. I think that is ridiculous given the circumstance. As it is, we would be settling on a dog that is not what we put money down for, and then to either have to cancel our trip or pay another $320 on top of the price of the dog, didn't seem very accommodating. I would have thought she could be a bit more flexible in this situation.

Great news!!! We were just contacted by a breeder in MA that has a litter due in July in our preferred color. I just sent in our application, if we're approved then I'm going to get my original deposit back and go with this litter.

Why not look at a shelter?
There may not be dogs of "ideal color" but there are so many loving wonderful dogs in need of a good home.
I'm sorry but I just can't believe people shell out so much money for designer mutts like labradoodles when there are so many dogs in need of a home.

I volunteer at an animal shelter. There are many dogs there that I love. I have also seen some of the dogs I love snap at others. On more then one occasion. I've also seen great dogs brought back in after biting a family member. I'm sorry, but I won't take that chance with my kids.
My DH and I spent months scouring pet finder and we simply couldn't agree. The very few dogs we both liked were gone by the time we called.
We know what we are looking for in a dog, and a labradoodle fits the bill. If we choose to spend our money on one, then that's our choice. And what makes a labradoodle any less deserving of a good home?

That is wonderful! I think as long as you go with a reputable breeder you are good. Getting a dog that is a good fit for your family is key- many dogs end up in shelters because of well intending people who do not do their research as I am sure you see when you are volunteering.

The whole idea of labradoodles is ridiculous to me. Its a mutt -I am sorry but I strongly side eye anyone who breeds them. They are out to make money off of breeding designer dogs while there are dozens and dozens and dozens of other less "trendy" mutts that need good homes.
If you get a puppy from a rescue there is no reason to think that the puppy will have any issues. But of course you have to do what you think is best, it just makes me sad.

As a volunteer at an animal shelter she is helping many, many dogs- With any rescue you NEVER know the dog's complete history- puppy or not. The shelter where I volunteer temperament tests all incoming dogs and puts them into training programs-- train to adopt. I do not understand your negativity toward the OP since she explained her reasoning. If you are so sad that so many dogs are sitting in shelters then volunteer your time to help make a difference.

I see what you're trying to say. I agree that I'm getting a mutt. I'm aware of that. But here is where you're off.
Yes there are thousands of dogs in shelters, I don't dispute that. And I genuinely feel bad about that, which I why I volunteer.
But here's another fact, we love a hairy dog, we just don't love the shedding. I spent years plucking, brushing, and filling garbage bags full of dog hair. I can not find a large, non shedding dog in a shelter. And tack on to that, finding a puppy who meets those desires. It's just not there. I'm ok with paying for what I want.
You don't have to agree, and that's perfectly fine. But you also don't have to try to make me feel bad about a decision that is good for my family.

I don't think you have to explain yourself. You wanted that type of dog and there's nothing wrong with that. I, too, was fearful of a rescue dog with 2 children. By you not buying the designer breed wouldn't change the fact that these puppies were already brought into the world. I get the whole idea of rescue dogs, shelter dogs, etc. but the fact of the matter is dog breeders will continue to breed and I just don't think anybody needs to be lectured on it, especially someone who works in an animal shelter.

gotta love the designer dog bashing... I have a goldendoodle and she's amazing. I'm not sorry for one second that I paid $1600 for her and I laugh at people who comment to me that I could have gotten her for free at a shelter. Her parents had amazing temperaments and both were calm dogs who loved kids. Researched a wonderful breeder who truly cares about the dogs and how they will turn out.
My aunt works at NSAL and has 9, yes 9, rescue dogs and several cats. all her dogs are wonderful for her, an older single woman. Many of them have bitten each other, and people that have come into her home, including me. I could never chance bringing that kind of dog into my home with a small child and nieces and nephews...
