NPR: when is good time to book air fare?
we need to book flight to Chicago for wedding mid July and the prices are nuts - usually you can get a decent fare for under $200. any tips? thanks

I would book it ASAP because the closer you get, the higher the fares are.
As a side note, the longer you wait, the more chance you have of being singled out for security doing an "extra search" of your person and belongings. They took us aside TWICE and wiped down our belongings, even in the inside of DD's carseat checking for explosives. I was mortified.

I actually had to book my DH's flight to FL about a month ago - the prices had dropped a little bit, but I noticed yesterday that they dropped again, so I got a credit.
Did you check Southwest? Some of their prices seem to be decent

Airlines tend to release lower fares Tuesday nights at midnight.

Unfortuantely we're in the same boat. We're trying to go from Chicago to NY in July and it's NUTS!!!  Usually I have found I get the best rates when I book it midweek (Tues-Wed.) But Southwest doesn't seem to matter. It's the same rate when I look everyday (until it starts going up.) And you're definitely better off flying midweek, but you probably don't want to do that if you're coming for a wedding. The rates are sky high right now and I really don't think they're gonna go back down anytime soon.

We recently traveled to the Midwest. We booked a very reasonable fare ($200 RT) 2 weeks before our departure date. It may be worth waiting a couple more weeks, they might get desperate to fill the planes and lower the fares.
I have heard the Tuesday at midnight thing too.

Fly the least desirable days, Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday. Book flights in the a.m., they get more expensive as the day goes on.
