Nurse gave me info about cold medicine...

Woke up with an awful sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, you get the awful picture. I called my doctor to find out of there is anything that I can take and the nurse told me Tylenol (which I knew) and Benadryl or Sudafed. I thought all medicines where a no-no? I know I should believe her and drive myself over to CVS asap but I am hesitating... Have any of you taken cold medicine while pregnant?

I went to the doctor on Monday because i had a bad cough and major congestion. I am very early (5 weeks) so she said only robitussin with no letters. She said penicillin was ok to take but didn't give it to me because I had a bad allergic reaction to amoxycililin 2 years ago.

Re: Nurse gave me info about cold medicine...

You are going to hear a million different things. My dr told me it was ok to take sudafed. When I went to CVS the pharmasist told me pregnant women should NOT take it and scared me to death. Chat Icon I looked it up on-line and didn't like what I read so I used a saline spray and tylenol.

I looked up over the counter medications in Your Pregnancy Week by Week. Here are the ones that were listed as safe.

For Pain Relief: Acetaminophen(Tylenol)

For Decongestion: Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton)

Nasal Spray Decongestants: (Afrin, Dristan Long-Lasting)

For Cough: Dextromethorphan Medicine (Robitussin, Vicks Formula 44)

For Stomach Relief: Antacids (Amphojel, Gelusil, Maalox, Milk of Magnesia)

Throat Relief: Lozenges (Sucrets)

Laxatives: buld fiber laxatives (Metamucil, Fiberall)

If you have the book, the list starts at the bottom of page 91

Thanks for that!! I just started reading that book and did not get that far yet!!

I have had an awful sinus infection ever since I got my BFP almost 2 weeks ago and I am SPARINGLY taking the tylenol sinus only when I really feel crappy because the Dr. said it was OK!
