Nursing and Pumping?

We are breast feeding on demand but would like to pump a little as well. Is it too soon (9 days)? Will pumping hurt my supply? Thanks!

Pumping will increase your supply because you are increasing the demand. My LC had me pumping in the beginning to make sure I had a good milk supply. I was supposed to pump every 3 hours (after a feeding) and at least once a night. I have plenty of milk now.

Re: Nursing and Pumping?

You just have to be careful WHEN you pump. Nursing the baby should come first, then pumping. Pump with a HIGH quality pump..not a cheapo one. There is a big difference between pumps.
Pump for 10-15 minutes AFTER you feed the baby. If you pump right before you feed the baby your breasts will not have enough to feed the baby.
Don't be suprised if you don't get a lot of milk when you pump at first. Very often your body needs time to adjust to pumping. So don't worry that if you pump and only get .5oz that your baby does not get enough. Remember you are feeding the baby first, so your body needs to time to make more milk for pumping. Let me know if you need any help!

I nursed one side & pumped the other to double my supply - and then would switch for the next feeding. Worked like a charm.

I kind of did the same thing for while to build up a supply to freeze for when I wasn't around.
