Re: NYC DOE--Do we think we will close?
Posted by beautyq115
NOPE! No matter how bad it is we are staying open! It is supposed tp snow for 50 hours BUT the free babysitting must go on!
I'm very happy that the schools closed but I just heard something that Joel Klein said and it made me cringe (actually, it almost verified the free babysitting).
The newscaster was saying something about the schools never really closing and Klein replied well, y'know...parents have to go to work, kids need to go to school. Personally, I would have rather he said...something like - "education is very important...and the kids..."
So, the question is...do you interpret that statement as 1) everyone has a job to do or 2) parents have to go to work so we need people to watch them?

2. And yet ironically, he totally disregards input from parents on most things.

Re: NYC DOE--Do we think we will close?
There were some pigs fliying today when I checked out my window.
I cannot believe he closed again...but he made the right decision. I am in eastern long island and it is horrible here, and I know the city got SOO much more. It would have been impossible to get in! When listening to channel 7 news this morning, one of the news casters made a comment that I was not so happy about (confirming that we are babysitters) when she was announcing that the Mayor just closed schools. She said something along the lines of "Now there will be 1.1 million students in NYC home from school and over 1.1 million parents that have to find other arrangments so that way they can go to work!" WHAT ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THE CHILDREN?!?!? All those 1.1 million children would be on school buses, in this horrible weather.
ENJOYR YOUR DAY OFF LADIES!! Looks like we are making history here!

Re: NYC DOE--Do we think we will close?
It's amazing that Bloomberg made the right decision for the second time in a MONTH.
I know I don't teach in NYC, but this whole regarding-teachers-as-babysitters thing makes me crazy, too. It's like... thank GOD those TEACHERS can go to work everyday because they AREN'T working parents who have to worry about finding childcare for their OWN children. (Because you know that for most teachers who live on LI, their own kids' schools close when the city doesn't, and they still have to go to work.)
