nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
if your a teacher of either then there is a test that you will be giving after Thanksgiving to your students to see how they progress. However, you are responsible for their progress.... if the students perform higher than a certain % then you are classified as an above average teacher...however, if they meet that percentage then you are an average teacher and if they fall below a certain % you are labeled as "below average" teacher....Then you will be given P.D. to help you improve....i find this unfair...what about the rest of the subjects these students take??? Those teachers are not accounted for and not labeled "above average or below average"...i think this is terrible to do to teachers. It's not always the teachers responsibility on how students do...the students need to make an effort as well.
also more budget cuts next year...who knows what will happen in the future ...maybe layoffs?? retirement incentives?? it's really scary whats goin on..thought i shared...
Did anyone else here this??

wow. I thought it was just the ITA test....?
How do you know it measures teachers' ability rather than students'? Did you hear that somewhere?

Re: nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
i have not heard this exactly.
last faculty conference we had our principal mentioned that they'd be looking at teacher's scores to determine their teaching strengths and weaknesses. but i didn't hear anything about labeling teachers that way.
the whole thing is ridiculous. how can you compare one class's performance to another's? the makeup of children in my class can be completely different from the makeup of children in your class.
and i agree - once again testing is too focuses on literacy and math and not enough on other subjects.

We got the letter about this during last months faculty conference from Joel Klein and Randi. We still can't believe our union agreed to this.

Re: nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
i dont think that will be based on acuity.
i just saw the data verification spreadsheet that my school recieved (alls chools got one). it is an excel spreadsheet with all teachers for testing grades listed by ATS class number and teacher file number for the 0405, 0506, 0607, and 0708 school years. this is how they will measure teacher impact on student performance.
still VERY unfair! for that, I want out of a testing grade!

Re: nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
it's for grades 4-8....the union representatives came to our school...i talked to someone else about it today...it could b based on how ur classes do over a certain amount of time...say if u have class 605 two years ago, last year class 603, and this year class 609 they look at the students academic achievement/progress and then that is how they determine if you are above average, below, or an average teacher.. supposedly principals had training on this.... we will see what happens after thanksgiving...i'm not very clear on this b/c it was told quickly at a meeting but im sure we will all find out soon enough

Re: nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
As of right now they are not allowed to use this info to evaluate our performance as a teacher. So it can't impact you keeping your job or not. But everyone at my school seems to think that the union will only be able to fight this for so long and eventually it will be used as an evaluation tool.
I am not going to stress over it.

Re: nyc E.L.A. n Math teachers...
My union rep also told us about this. It is only for last years 4-8 grade teachers. They are going to track where your kids did well and did not. Then they are going to have to give you PD on whatever the weakness is found to be. In no way can it be used as a way of grading a teacher. ---So this is what we got from our UFT rep!! Yea right!

It seems that my main weakness was that my kids came to school stoned or not at all. That should be interesting PD.
