NYC Half Marathon on March 17 - What should I do?

Hi!

I just found out that a friend of mine can't run the NYC half this coming Sunday on March 17. She asked if I wanted to take her spot. I've ran only one half marathon before and really enjoyed it. I'm currently in my second week of training for the LI half marathon. Since my first half in September 2012, I have tried to keep up with 20-25 miles per week which would include an 8-10mile run on Sundays. I also did the Run to the Brewery 10 mile race in January. I comfortably ran 10 miles outside today. Should I do it or is this a bad idea? I have a feeling there are a lot of hills in this one and although I've mostly only been running outside, I haven't been really training with hills. I don't know too much about the course, I'm looking into it now. I've heard it's a great race but not sure if I'm strong enough right now to do it.

Any thoughts? Has anyone reading this ran the NYC half before that can offer some advice about the course?

TIA!!

Re: NYC Half Marathon on March 17 - What should I do?

Thank you all for your responses, I really appreciate it! I think I'm going to do it :). Another quick question, I haven't ironed out all the details yet with my friend (for example I'm pretty sure she'll have to pick up the packet since I read they're strict with that) can anyone share what the registration fee was? I feel like anything NYC is usually kind of pricey so just want to have a heads up about that.

Thanks again!

As far as being able to run it, as the others said, you TOTALLY can do it! 10 miles is more than enough to have a great race. Central Park is the only part where you will encounter any hills, and aside from the Harlem Hills, they're really not bad. That will be the first 6 or so miles of the race. I believe the entry fee was about $115-$120, but I'm not sure.

I will say that NYRR is very strict about running with someone else's number and basically threaten to ban you from everything including the NYC Marathon if you're caught - I just wanted to advise you not to publicize on FB or anywhere that can be seen by many that you're running under a different person's number. I'm not saying this to play police officer, just wanted to throw that out there so you know. I do know several who have run under other people's numbers and were fine, but they've gotten so strict about it the past few years. Your friend will definitely have to pick up her own number as they treat the number pick-up like the NYC Marathon pick-up where only runners can pick up their own race materials.

Have fun and enjoy it!!!

I was thinking the same thing, that it's really not allowed. It's a friend of my friend. I guess she doesn't want to lose out on the money. Thanks for the advice!

You will be fine having already raced 10 miles.

The fee was $117 plus I think $5 registration fee.

I'm wondering how many drunk St Patty's party goers I will see at 7 AM!! LOL

Closer to the bottom of this webpage it seems some dates and times are listed for pickup. The girl I'm running for is getting her packet on Thursday.

I am!!! You know - I don't think they sent an email about details. They've sent plenty about asking for donations! I've been checking the half page NJG posted above. I really wish I could pick up the morning of, but I think I'm going Saturday.

I know I won't be under 1:50, but I am excepting that I need to take baby steps to get back there. I'm just going to try to enjoy running through Times Square! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It should be a good start to a fun year - NYC half and full plus I'm doing 9+1 again with my BFF.

Good luck to all.

Re: NYC Half Marathon on March 17 - What should I do?

I would definitely do it! You are going to have to pretend to be her and be incognito. NYRR has rules about taking other runner's places. However, I ran in someone else's place last year in a NYRR place without issue. Bottom line, if you can run 10, you can run 13.1.

Funny! And now you guys are running, and I'm envious. Since I had my DD, I have only run 1x in 10 months. What a difference a year makes. It's going to be a long road back for me.
