NYC in days gone by
I saw this photography thread and I was amazed at how much NYC has changed during our lifetime. I am not naive enough to believe that poverty and a brutal NY doesn't exist still, but I remember when the subways looked a bit like the ones in the pictures...and the cars.
Anyway, I won't say enjoy, but have an interesting look at this photoessay

Re: NYC in days gone by
So do I.
I lived on East 95th street in Manhattan when I was younger and remember most to the buildings looking like the ones in the pictures. My siblings and I would play in the abandoned buildings to keep ourselves busy Those pictures bring back a lot of memories.

Those were some amazing photos. In my opinion, the essay is not very objective but it represents a viewpoint that people should see.

Re: NYC in days gone by
I remember those days.... anyone remember the riots in the 70's (due to the severely bad economy and the near bankruptcy of NYC)? that's the main reason things became soooo bad.
yeah, most subways looked like those pics.... and even SoHo and the area around penn station had tons of graffiti, some burned-out buildings, and trash... (oh, forgot to mention those trash strikes ) The avenues didn't look too bad, but the cross streets were all horrible and dangerous.
most of the stripped cars and burned out buildings were in harlem and the outer buroughs, though...
remember ed koch's solution to all of those burned out buildings? he replaced the broken windows with false ones with pictures of drapes, flower pots and pets

Re: NYC in days gone by
Koch got the city when it was on the brink of bankruptcy when Mayor Beame screwed everything up....he did turn things around....until Dinkins came and messed it all up again
DH lived in the Bronx and remembers neighborhoods exactly like in these pictures
