NYC Rep wants to ban Pit bulls.
Story from channel 7 (ABC) news Source New move to ban pit bulls Eyewitness News (New York - WABC, December 26, 2006) - It is dramatic step to be sure but how else to stop the many pit bull attacks on innocent people?
New York City Council Peter Vallone Jr., says the only way is to get pit bulls off the streets. He talked to Eyewitness News reporter Carolina Tarazona today.
Some people think pit bulls are great and very lovable but others, like Council Member Peter Vallone, say they think they are a danger to society. He says he just wants them off the streets for good.
Queens Council Member, Peter Vallone Jr., wants the city to make it illegal for people to keep pit bulls as pets.
Vallone, NYC Council Member: "I am looking to ban pit bulls here in New York City, new pit bulls. We would never take a dog away from somebody, but for new ownership of pit bulls in NYC." Reporter: "Which means you can't buy or breed into?" Vallone: "Correct."
Why? Vallone says he believes the breed is more aggressive. He adds pit bulls are often used as weapons by drug dealers and gangs to intimidate enemies. He says many times the victims are innocent children.
"When they attack, whether it because of a bad training or because it is inbred, they can't be stopped. And that is why they need to be treated differently than other dogs." Vallone said. "There are weapon on the street."
Not everyone thinks that pit bulls are an attack waiting to happen. Pedero Rosario has four of these dogs and he has worked for Manhattan shelter and adoption center for over a decade.
"They are nice animals to play, you know? People gave them a bad name because there are a lot of not responsible owners out there," Rosario said. "But with responsible owners, these dogs could be great pets in the house."
Another dog lover seemed to agree, they say vicious behaviors are learned, not inherited.
Greta Godoy, Astoria resident: "It all has to do with how you teach them. How you nurture them. Because if do you abuse them, they will become aggressive."
While council members told us this proposal is not likely to pass any time soon, Vallone says, he still has to submit to Albany to see what lawmakers there think of his plan.

american pit bulls are banned here (australia). That makes me sad. These dogs get such a bad rap from a few owners who mistreat them and raise them improperly. They actually were war dogs not too long ago, and have been proven to be great family dogs (for the right people).

Re: NYC Rep wants to ban Pit bulls.
This debate goes round and round...it is terribly sad. I had a pit/rottie mix for 11 years...he was the sweetest dog you could have ever met. I know many pitties, and they are just amazing animals when in the right hands. I am fostering one right now, and considering adopting him, because he is just terribly sweet.
It's the bad owners that need to be banned, i wish there was more of a way to control WHO owns them, but to ban them altogether is just ridiculous...

I think they are banned here (I read somewhere they were). I know that you cannot import them here if you move here. I know they banned them from attacks. I dont know how I feel about it, really. I dont know that much about pit bulls.
A lot of animals are banned here, b/c of strict quarantine reasons. This country has a bad past of an animal coming into the country and it just goes feral.

I feels so sad that these dogs have such a bad rep. It's true...it is the owners who train them to attack, etc most of the time.
We have a pit bull. He is such a mush.

Re: NYC Rep wants to ban Pit bulls.
Considering there is really no way to control who gets a pit bull, I have to agree with this ban.....
It's not fair, as I know MANY sweet, lovable pits. But the breed in general has a reputation as a fierce fighting breed (when trained to be) and there is just no way to keep them out of the hands of people who will exploit that reputation.

Well, I HOPE you are the minority, because you must realize that the majority of dogs in shelters are pit bulls, and the ban would mean they would all be murdered, no matter how sweet and wonderful they are, no matter how great a home there is for them. I will fight this ban, and will continue to be a part of rescue groups that instead of giving up on the breed and allowing them to be killed, try to educate to public and change the mind of people like you. I'd love for you to come meet my Skip, and tell me he doesn't deserve to have a life!

Actually they can. They can enforce the breeding and require special licenses for ownership. With special licensing they can also require special training.
Not that this scenario is ideal either, but I think a breed-wide ban sets a dangerous precedent.

Re: NYC Rep wants to ban Pit bulls.
OK- lets be honest here.... do we really think that the government will put funding toward a venture such as regulation of a breed that has such a bad reputation with the public? We can't even regulate gun control in this country! No- it's cheaper to just ban the breed. And the pit mixes in shelters are USUALLY listed as "terrier mix" (I volunteer at my local humane society) so there's one way around the adoption issue. Pure pits could be adopted out to states without the ban.
Please go back and reread my post- I didn't say that I don't like pits. I certainly didn't say that all pits are vicious. In fact, I mentioned how sweet my friends' pits are. So no, you don't need to educate me- I already know.
The sad fact of the matter is that pits are an incredibly strong breed who now (thanks to the animals who buy and exploit these dogs)have a rep as an aggressive dog, and the rap sheet to prove it.
Just trying to explain why I think there's no way around this ban
