NYC Restaurant Question

If you've been to One If By Land, Two If By Sea...can you tell me if it truly earns its "Most Romantic Restaurant In New York" title? I'm worried it's a bit played out! It's in the West Village, which I LOVE...and DH and I are trying to find a cozy, romantic spot for the night we go in to see Nutcracker on 12/23...the night before my birthday, too!!!!

The site is www.oneifbyland.com if anyone wants to see it!

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

I went there like two years ago. The ambiance is very nice. Yes, it is romantic and cozy. I don't know if I would say it is the most romantic restaurant but yes it is pretty nice. You will like it.

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

We went there too and FH and I say it was the best meal we've had at a restaurant probably b/c it was restaurant week so we had low expections

We were pleasantly surprised

It is romantic - the most romantic, maybe not...

but the white wine was ice cold (it was 100 degrees out outside) and the loin of pork and salmon were awesome

I would recommend going there

EDIT: I'm talking about One if By Land...

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

We were there a couple of years ago—I was disappointed with it and found it to be totally overrated. We did have a nice romantic spot because we were in the small room upstairs in a corner, next to a Christmas tree. I don't know if I'd say the general ambiance is super-romantic though. And I was disappointed with the food as well. It wasn't horrible, just didn't live up to the hype, but I guess few things do.

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

We also went there last year and I did not think it was worth it. We were in a small room but I didn't think the ambience was that great. The food was okay. My husband did not like it at all. I feel there are better restaurants than this in the city.

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

For romantic dinners near lincoln center (we have season tix to the opera), we go to Petrossian b/c it's not far and is walkable. It's a beautiful restaurant, top notch service and food. It's on the pricey side, but worth every penny IMHO

I haven't been to One if by Land but DH & I like to go to Cite Grill around Christmas time and get the wine dinner. We like it since it's so close to Tree & the Windows on 5th. And after a few glasses of unlimited wine it's definitely festive.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

I went there last year for my birthday. It was just ok. For the price we didnt think it was worth it. The ambiance was nice especially since it was during the holiday season and it was decorated very nicely. Again, it was just ok but not worth the money. I have friends who just go for dessert every year - that may be a good way to check it out.

I have also been to Candela. It was very nice and the food was good, but I didnt find it THAT romantic since the tables are so close together.

I was there a few years ago and found it to be really good. The food was tasty and prepared nicely. The ambiance was a little older, but I liked that (there were no kids screaming). We still talk about the passion fruit souffle.

Re: NYC Restaurant Question

DH was going to take me there after we got engaged, but had heard it was overrated and not worth the $$$. He then found out about the private wine room at Philip Marie and we went there instead. This is what I posted about it on the spinoff to this thread:

The regular restaurant is fine but they have a private wine cellar down stairs where you get a private waiter and you have an open menu (can order anything you want). The chef comes out to help you decide and he also matches a glass of wine with each course. YOu are in a room that looks like a wine cellar and there is soft music playing. It is totally private. The food and ambience was amazing! We told several of our friends about and they went for thier 1 year anniversaries. Totally recommend it!

I think the price was $200 plus tax and tip when we went and we got 5 courses 4 glasses of wine and a glass of champagne each!
