NYC Teachers - Question for you re: hiring??

I went on the NYC website and it said that they are no longer accepting online applications -- but, it also said that they do need science teachers. So far, nothing on the Island has worked out for DH so he is looking into this. Anyone who works in the City know where he can go in person to apply or a number he can call?

We are looking to call first thing Monday about this.

Thank you so much!!!

Re: NYC Teachers - Question for you re: hiring??

From what I heard from my DH who is a NYC teacher, they are NOT hiring from outside the system this year. So many teachers already within the system this year were excessed due to budget cuts, so those teachers will get priority to fill any vacancies before outisde people are hired.

HOWEVER, this the NYC DOE we're talking about which is dysfunctional on a good day. what i would recommend is contacting Court Street (DOE headquarters) in Brooklyn. I would meet with someone there and have transcripts and proof of cert. ready. science is a shortage area, so there may be something. this would also get your DH's info. in their system and he would be assigned a file number (your ID number within their system). Also, don't count on them to place you. DH should put feelers out, drop off resumes at schools, network, go to any job fairs (if they are even doing them this year) etc. The only way I got interviews and job offers through the DOE was doing everything MYSELF. I went to job fairs and also literally walked into schools i was interested in to drop off my resume. This is how I got a job.

DH is a Teachjing Fellow and only got the school he wanted was because a friend of mine worked there, referred him. They liked his resume, they gave him an interview and he was hired on the spot. Anything the DOE gave him in terms of schools with "vacancies" led to complete dead ends and Fellows is a program where they supposedly guarantee you a job. DH knew Fellows that didnd't even get placed right away! So IMO, the moral of the story is you have to be your own advocate to get a job, particularly now with so many budget cuts and excessing going on.
Many teachers on here are DOE teachers and may have better advice and know more about how they do things now, but this is my experience.

GOOD LUCK!

Actually, the hiring freeze was taken off from what I understand. It was part of the way the mayor got more control. I would recommend contacting the Court Street office... but better yet...contact the Queens Human Resources Office---The Rock---- is what it is affectionately called. I suppose you want your DH to work in Queens.
I have a friend with a 7-12 Bio license and he has had a hard time finding a job in a "good" school.

GOOD LUCK!
