NYC Teachers..

Maybe someone can answer this question I have....

I know as of the last contract teachers who have 5 years in the system get a 1000 dollar "longevity" on top of their salary. When you are looking at the salary scale all the way at the bottom where the longevity level salaries are listed (5, 10, 20, etc) What does the 5 year longevity stand for at the bottom? So for example say you are on step 5a starting your fifth year would you be at 5a pay or 5 longevity at the bottom? There is a HUGE difference but I really don't understand what the 5 year longevity pay thing means at the bottom..

AM I making sense? Does anyone know the answer?

Re: NYC Teachers..

If you are at 5A you add the $1000 to the salary. So if 5A is 55K then you add the 1000 and are making 56K.

It means that when you get to your 5th year you get a 1000 bonus on top of what you earn in the 5th step. When you get to the 8th step there are no more steps (9, 10, 11, etc) so what they do is 8b+10 is really your tenth year and they are showing you at the bottom that your salary during that year will be 4,089 more than step 8b. During your 13th year 8b+13 you will make 6,190 more than the 8b step. Your 15th year (8b+15) you will make 10, 630 more than step 8b. Your 18th year 8b+18 will be 11,794 more than step 8b. It keeps going in this pattern. I don't know why they just don't list it as step 10 , 13, 15 etc!

So the only year you really get a bonus on top of your salary is the 5th year.
