NYC Teachers!!!
City, Teachers Announce Contract Deal Through 2009 November 07, 2006
New York City public school teachers would see their salaries go up by more than 7 percent under a tentative deal announced Monday night, a year before their current contract is set to expire.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and representatives of the United Federation of Teachers announced the contract at a late-night news conference at City Hall.
The new deal would increase the minimum teacher salary to $42,512, and hike top teachers salaries to more than $100,000. It would also launch a new peer intervention program to aid struggling teachers.
"There are solid, across the board raises in the next two years,” said President of the United Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten. “Because it is an early contract, there is also a lump sum payment, assuming the contract is ratified in January 2007. Where as we may disagree, about how tough that last contract was, all of us agree teachers work hard.”
"We still have a long road ahead, but for the first time in decades our schools are really headed in the right direction,” said Bloomberg. “Our teachers deserve a lot of credit for these historic gains.”
The union's rank and file still needs to approve the deal by January.
The contract would run through 2009.

Re: NYC Teachers!!!
Color me cynical- the money is nice, but I don't have a good feeling about this- we still lost a few important things in the last contract and now we won't really have the opportunity to get them back.
I hope Randi hasn't sold us out again.

Re: NYC Teachers!!!
We were told today that Randi Weingarten is up for reelection this year....
That explains a lot, but I'll take the extra money!

What do we have to give up this time??? I'm cynical, they wouldn't just hand over a raise. She probably sold us out again!

City In Tentative Deal with Teachers' Union
The article says that it is a straightforward raise with no additional work time. Does this sound too good to be true to anyone else?

Yes!
This may be interesting reading to anyone curious about the contract.

The author pointed out that this deal was rushed through without going to the Delegate Assembly, which is the norm. And while it does not seem that we're not giving anything up, we won't be getting back what we've lost (like the right to grieve file letters, which I think is huge)

Re: NYC Teachers!!!
Also, the city is hiring paperwork people to come into your classroom and assist you with it all so you can "teach" since paperwork is a huge deal these days... I'll believe that one when I see it

I don't know how people who don't know us and don't know are kids are going to help with "paperwork."
I also get the impression that healthcare and pension issues are being negotiated separately.
