Re: NYC teachers ... anyone do summer school?
I did it for several years- from '99 till '05. NYC being NYC, it's subject to change, and much depends on your region/district. There were years when it was a full day, four days a week, a half day, five days a week, a half day, four days a week. Most recently, I think I worked M-TH from 8 to 12:30. Again, this was set by my region, not the city.
Time frame: It usually starts with training the day after school ends, which stinks, and ends around the first week in August, like the 7th or 8th.
Money: Per session, so it's decent. I think per session is now about $38 an hour? I am not sure the exact amount.
I had a few very lucky years when Teach for America was using our school as their training site, so I didn't have to actually teach- I supervised the teachers and gave them feedback. I loved it. In '05 they weren't at my school, but I had a/c and a nice group of kids. The classes tend to be smaller and they give you all the materials so planning is minimal. Overall, I haven't found it too terrible.
