Re: NYC teachers- how detailed is your lesson plan?
I was told we needed a plan for every lesson we are teaching and administrators would be asking for our lesson plans whenever they want. I'm getting a new executive principal in October and she is really big with asking for lesson plans. I wouldn't doubt her just coming into our site once a week and collecting everyone's lesson plans...
My lesson plans will include-
My objective Materials Texts Common core standards Opening/do now Procedures Closing Assessment Modifications/differentiation if needed (my class changes on a daily basis and there are a lot of different learners in one class)
It is my understanding that your plans need to be detailed enough that if someone took over your class, s/he could still teach the lesson as you intended. My procedures will probably be just notes for myself...

Re: NYC teachers- how detailed is your lesson plan?
We were told that we have to have lesson plans everyday for each class. Some of us have 4 preps so it is insane (I teach high school) When asked if we really have to do this our UFT rep just shrugged and told us to do it.
We have to have: Aim Motivation/Do Now mini-lesson Higher Order Questions Procedures Group work and how they are grouped CCSS What components of Danielson we are hitting Materials Closing Assessment
For. Every. Single. Class
There is not enough time in the day to do this.

Re: NYC teachers- how detailed is your lesson plan?
I teach in a NYC Charter school and I'm required to write a lesson plan for every subject, each day.
I'm writing 5 plans for ELA, writing, math, science, and social studies a week - 25 written plans a week! It's ridiculous.
And so time consuming!

No. In high school 4 preps equal the number of different classes I have to prepare for, NOT the number of periods I have to prepare.
So I have: English 11 x 2 English 9 English 12 Journalism
So I have to have lesson plans for four totally different classes each day.

I'm in a charter school and this is the format we have been required to follow for quite some time. There are 3 teachers on every grade level and we split our planning. I plan for Math and writing, one teacher does SS and science, and the other teacher plans phonics and reading. Is that a possibility for you?

This is the same thing I do at my charter school. All I do is tweak their lessons to fit my needs.

I *thankfully* only teach 2 sections of ELA, 2 sections of GED, and 1 section of GED ready (but that class isn't even assembled until a few weeks into school...), so I really only need 2 lessons a day.

Re: NYC teachers- how detailed is your lesson plan?
I teach NYC and will not have a formal lesson plan for each lesson each day. I have a lesson plan book.....I write the standard and objective in the box, a small plan for the lesson. That's it! Our contract states we have to have a plan but they can not tell us how long, how it is written, etc. Formal typed out plans I only do for my observations.

NYC teachers- how detailed is your lesson plan?
To manage some of this, my group 5th grade decided to share plans. Each of us plans one subject with the general objective, common core etc. then we leave space where we can each individually quickly write in who is in our groups, etc. We agree to have it ready and sent to each other by a certain time on Sunday. We did this last year and it worked great!

this sounds like it makes perfect sense but we are being told that we could "lose points" for this on informals...

If they want MORE than that for informals, they need to start giving us more preps. This is getting out of control.

It's true! When are we supposed to be doing this? Yes...we get 45 minutes but we all know it's not 45 solid work minutes..LOL...

And there is no way llan book "lesson plans" are going to be acceptable anymore from what I hear- which is ridiculous! There is no time for this!

This is such a joke! I just love our union. It SUCKS and I think that every teacher should stop paying dues. When are they going to help us out. I'm beyond fed up.

However, the principal can dictate what goes into the plan....it can look like whatever you want, but what needs to be in the plan can be dictated by the principal.
