NYC Teachers Re: Medical Certified Days VERSUS Self-Treated Days
Even though I' ve been a city teacher for 11 years there is still so many unanswered questions in my mind, especially since I have a payroll secretary from hell
Question: I know we get 10 days/year, 7 self treated and 3 that can be used as personal days. If lets say you end up being absent 15 days for instance but 6 days were medically certified (doctors note) how does this apply or not apply to being possibly penalized and/or given a U rating due to "excessive" absences?
Can you technically go over the 10 limit if you have a DR's note?
TIA

Re: NYC Teachers Re: Medical Certified Days VERSUS Self-Treated Days
you can use days from your CAR bank if you have them from prior years. you can also borrow days so you will end up with negative days in your bank if you have a doctors note and legit medical documentation. if you cannot supply this, you will get docked pay. i had a medical absence a few years ago and they docked my paycheck before i was able to submit the paperwork. once i got it in then they reimbursed me. i feel your pain with the nonsense with doe usually i find i get better info from calling hr connect and making sure i get the name of the person i spoke to. good luck!

I think it depends on how your principal is. If they want to screw people then the answer is NO you can't and if they are understanding and you have maybe spoken to them then I would say it would be ok.

following the tenth absence you must present a doctor's note for every absence that occurs thereafter. You can't be absent 10 times with a doctor's note that then on the 11th take a personal day or a self-treated day.

A little confused by your statement:) Do you know how it applies to ones rateing though, that was my main question:) If you go over 10, but half are with Dr notes does that/can it protect you from your principal trying to give you a u rating for exceeding 10?
Thanks

It's principal's discretion but you can definitely grieve it if given a u rating. I have been going through this for the last 2 years with my principal......what she has been doing is she puts a letter to my file about my absences but has yet to rate me as a 'U" We go round and round but there are no difinitive answers anywhere in our contract about how many absences equal a 'u' rating! I have had about the same number of absences like you stated and I have been with the DOE 13 years.
