NYC Teachers...HELP!
What insurance plan should DH and I choose? He's a NYC teacher now and I think I am going to give up my plan that i have at my school... i have Empire - United Health Care. . . . i figured why not since I pay almost $200.00 a month and DH pays NOTHING!
GHI or HIP? thoguhts???? who's better? should i just stick with my own plan...

Re: NYC Teachers...HELP!
i just never liked HIP ive heard stories about them over the years and i know from working in a DRs office that they are a PIA
I would go with GHI.
I always had UHC - Empire and loved it. but now that i am in the city i pay extra for BCBS butits referral and i hate that. FH has Empire so when we get married over the summer im going under his so i have have my good HC back

I hav e GHI cpb (or cbp0 plus the optional rider. So rather than being $0, with the rider it is $80 a month. Nto too bad.

Re: NYC Teachers...HELP!
i have HIP and have had it for 10 years. i LOVE it! never ever had a problem and i've had several surgeries, etc. there's no copay for ANYTHING. it gets a bad rap, but it's much better than anything else i've been offered

I had GHI. It was great - it's free, and you don't need referrals for anything. Just show up at any doctor's office. And in six years they never disputed any charges or anything and I never had to pay more than my copayment.

I have HIP too- it was the pits when you had to use the center doctors, but once they began allowing private practice docs, it got much better. My doctors are wonderful and I've never had a problem with them. There are a lot of doctors who take HIP. I had a baby in March and didn't pay a cent.

Re: NYC Teachers...HELP!
So there are advantages to both!! i like that there is so co-pays for anything on HIP... but a lot of people like GHI. and some of my doctors take GHI and some take HIP, but all of them aren't on just one.... grrr

FYI- There has been talk for a while about a GHI/HIP merger.

Re: NYC Teachers...HELP!
we have GHI. It is much better than my insurance i had before i was married (DH is a teacher). im not sure how it compares to the other plans offered to the teachers.
HE said that a co-worker recently had a baby and didn't have to pay anything out of pocket with GHI

a lot of people still think you need to go to a center. i've never been to one. my doctors accept many different insurance plans. i never pay a cent for anything.

Re: NYC Teachers...HELP!
I would pick GHI over HIP. Personally I chose to go with my own plan. Some doctors, especially specialists have dropped GHI. My husband and I chose to go with CIGNA.
